kevin smith
Hi all does anyone know someone in Essex who can do a speedo conversion correctly. Thanks Kevin.
David P
Is this what is wrong with your "transmission and/or ECU"?
j_jza80
Just out of interest, what is the difference between the way the speed signals are sent from the gearbox to the dials between a UK spec and a J spec?
David P
Speed signals are same, it's the ECU, speedometer and tachometer that are different.
j_jza80
So does the signal go from the gearbox, to the ecu, then on to the speedo? I was curious if my syvecs could act as a speed converter, but I've been told not.
stevie_b
So does the signal go from the gearbox, to the ecu, then on to the speedo? I was curious if my syvecs could act as a speed converter, but I've been told not. On JSpecs, the signal goes from gearbox, to speedo, then on to odometer, then onto the ECU. The ECU is at the end of the chain. I don't know about UK specs, but I'd be really surprised if they worked differently.
j_jza80
I'd love to find a proper solution to this issue, rather than chopping up the factory wiring to fit a signal fudger that seem to regularly fail.
David P
Fit a mph speedometer.
j_jza80
To a facelift dash?
David P
Why not?
j_jza80
Are you just talking about the facia, or the whole mechanism? I'm not even sure if they're the same size, fitment etc.
David P
Just the mechanism will do the job you want, plug & play.
kevin smith
yes David P I think this maybe the problem, is there anyone fairly local I can pay to sort out the problem as I am not able to do it myself. I don't work so am free all-day to go to them.
David P
I don't know of anyone in your patch, you need input from a local yokel? It's not rocket science, look behind the odo and speedo, or sometimes adjacent to ECU and you'll find an after market gizmo. Some folks are too lazy to solder the joints which leads to problems such as yours. If that's the problem solder them up. If that doesn't fix it, remove the gizmo and rejoin wires as when stock and have a working transmission with a kph readout until you can find a replacement speed converter. kevin smith
thanks very much, I will give that ago. had a look at the dash and that has been off some screws missing so will start there.
David P
Checking for any fault codes is the place to start.
kevin smith
Thanks David P whilst is was looking for the ECU as i thought it was behind the dash ? now know where it is LOL, anyway i must of disturbed something behind the dash (ie wiring) because the problems have stopped, so i am going to take your advise and going back in behind the dash and sort the problem and try and locate a uk spec speedo. Many thanks for your advice (what a great club this is) Thanks Kevin.
David P
Fitting a UK speedo will negate the converter but will return the speed limiter. If wiggling mended it, just find and fix the dodgy joint.
kevin smith
Hi David P thanks i have ordered a new speed converter/de limiter the correct one for the car. so will leave the uk speedo. and do the job properly. Thanks Kevin.
