Richie_k83
Drifting, something I have been meaning to do for a long, long time now. Constantly held back by finding the time to go with previous cars i've owned... Anywho, me and the wife are gonna do it. Searching for a car was easy. Finding a car we both liked as a budget skidder was not. We settled for an E36 Compact 1.6l based on its price and location. Seen a few that are more than capable as an entry level car. A little tatty, yes. But its bound to get bashed i'm sure... Nice plate too, valued at £800, will get that sold for wheels and tyres etc I think lol

Richie_k83
Nice! Missus and I do track days together in an MX5 (now being supercharged ) Mk1 MX5 was my first choice, had a couple and know them inside out. Wife doesn't like them though lol
Richie_k83
Coilovers, no big budget here, just some poverty spec eBay jobbies to stiffen things up a little Much lower, although it wont go any further on the rear...
Richie_k83
General service work was next on the to do list. Seems to be a common thing I do whenever I buy a car, full service...! Notice how there are some Powerflex Boxes in there too.... Also noticed the intake hose was mullered, plus the clips that hold the airbox shut were missing. Not a huge deal usually but it drove like an absolute pig until this was sorted, Another quality eBay spec replacment, Another thing to make it more driftable was to weld the diff. So off comes the complete rear axle, Found some rot on the passenger sill All off, was a bitch to do on my own...
Richie_k83
I decided to take the complete rear axle off mainly because of the mounting bushes. I have read that drifting chews them up so opted for the Powerflex Black Series mounting bushes. I forgot how crap it is to do this job with no press. Ahh well, Blow Torch with a touch of brute force and ignorance it is then, Works every time, New bushes went in a treat once it had cooled enough to clean, Diff welding time was next, seing as the cover is off for bushing. Drained the Oil, cleaned any excess off with Petrol and burnt off what was left, Filled the diff with water so the spatter doesnt stick to any internals. Grabbed the Welder and got to it, managed not to burn my legs in the process, Left it to cool overnight, drained the water out and other bits. Filled it up with new Oil, sealed up, job done
Richie_k83
Got round to Welding my Sills up shortly after the Axle went back on. Should be good for another year or two lol Car drives ok, chirping and scuffing its way around car parks and forecourts lol. Being nice and low powered, taking a chunk of weight off the rear wheels was next up, removed everything, trim, tools, spare wheel, the lot Also to keep me in place and to shed a bit of weight, I decided to re-use my bucket seat out of my Supra. Ordered a new base with runner to suit the oem bolt holes, Fitted the seat and ready to drop in later,
Richie_k83
Clocked an E36 with yellow inner lenses a few weeks back. Ordered some tint film and gave it a go. Not bad.... Also just got my seat bolted in, too dark for a pic, will chuck one up tomorrow,
st3ven1
Great effort doing this all yourself on an old BM. Would have been tempted for a bigger engine myself, maybe a 323/325/328. Although my E36 compact knowledge isn't great so it might not even of came with these engines. Should be a lot of fun though, and will be a great car to learn in as you won't be worried about a few drift scars.
Richie_k83
Got the Seat in, wont be bothering with a Harness as its that supportive anyway.

There is plenty of room under the bonnet and seen lots of people dropping any of those 6 Cylinder engines in with ease. Besides, if you cant drift a lower powered car, more power isnt going to help. The smaller engines are a dime a dozen, tempted to get a spare to rebuild incase this one blows up lol
Richie_k83
Been a while sinse i posted on this thread...! Made a few changes on the car in preperation for drifting, * Spare wheels * JR Air Filter * Cherry Bomb exhaust * Dished steering wheel Decided it was about time i got trackside, as all it is being used for is a daily runner to and from work whilst my Supra awaits a gearbox.... I booked a date with the guys at Flatout Factory at Birmingham Wheels. They do drift tuition, but i opted for the none tutored day so i can just learn at my own pace. Scrounged loads of scrap 15" tyres from various garages for free and loaded the car up Sunday morning, Numbers were limited to 15x cars with an open pit all day. Really relaxed atmosphere and everyone was friendly and more than happy to lend a hand with tyre changing etc. By the end of the day i had managed to drift the complete corner at each end of the oval track and cary the drift out of the corner and atleast 1/3 the way up the straight. (Not bad for a poxy 1.6l..!) The car behaved really well apart from pushing the coolant out of the rad cap, however, the gauge never moved over half way with a few cool down laps, heaters on full whack and topping it back up again. I didnt manage to get many images, but i have some GoPro footage to go through later. Very rewarding as the day goes on and you can maintain the drift throughout the corner. Strongly reccomend it for anyone who wants to have a crack.
Richie_k83
Had my first dabble at putting a GoPro video together, although i did cheat with the GoPro Studio app and used a template https://vimeo.com/177316924 Already looking at later dates to go play, stocked up on more tyres and will be back out soon, although i would rather be doing it in the Supra...!
