Dnk
I'm just looking at Z4 convertibles and wondered what the difference is
imi
the gearknob is one indicator - owned BMWs with both types of gearknobs - aesthetically the new one looks better, functionally the old one is simpler and works better. looks like one is a facelift while the other is not -
Dnk
There's four different cars there, ones a 2010 and 3 are 2011's all facelift from what I can see Four different set ups from what I can see going by the photos

In the pics that you shared I dont see a car with the old i-drive - however something to bear in mind when selecting a car (assuming that i-drive is important to you). Dnk
This ticks all the boxes for me http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201508226272807?make=bmw&page=1&model=z4&engine-size-cars=3l_to_3-9l&price-to=25000&search-target=usedcars&radius=1501&onesearchad=used&postcode=b475hj&transmission=automatic&sort=pricedesc&logcode=p Also this as its a 2012 car but has the older looking gear lever ? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201511188812597?make=bmw&page=1&model=z4&engine-size-cars=3l_to_3-9l&price-to=25000&search-target=usedcars&radius=1501&onesearchad=used&postcode=b475hj&transmission=automatic&sort=pricedesc&logcode=p
MattP
BMW do more than one Auto the older style looking shifter will be a proper auto box the newer looking one will likely be a DCT
sideexitsupra
I would guess that as the older car is the 35i and the newer one the 30i, it might be down to when they were registered rather than when they were built? Or they may have changed the 35i before the 30i? Good p[oint above. Did the 35i have DCT transmission? I have BM with the newer style selector and find it better than than the "traditional" style as you select drive with one simple movement rather than having to select the right indent passing through neutral and reverse first. MattP
The newer style gearstick is much more pleasant to use from experience.

Seems like both have the newer idrive that is HDD based - which is a must - like I mentioned earlier- the older gearstick is better functionally (moving from reverse / park / drive = simple unlike the new one which can be annoying) - the new one looks cooler. Have you tried a Cayman or Boxster instead - ideally a 981 rather than the 987.
Dnk
I just thought it strange the car with the red interior that's a 2012 has the older gear lever hence my question
Pudsey
My car has the old style, and its a 6 speed auto (Steptronic) with paddle shift. A friend of mine has a 2010 5 series with the newer shifter, and that's an 8 speed option (Dual Clutch Transmission). It may well be the number of speeds, along with the type of automatic box. NB. After a little research. The older style one is a steptonic, and the new one is a dual clutch transmission. As the gents have mentioned above. MattP
Go into a BMW dealer and test them both first DNK the newer DCT gearboxes are still a bit rough around the edges in BMW and Audi. I have had a few new S-Tronics lately and they are appalling at stop start 1-2nd gear really really rough boxes they feel like being Shunted when in slow moving traffic. However the BMW proper Auto steptronic/Tiptronic is sublime smooth as silk.
Dnk
If I can find one local that was my plan, I shan't be parting with a chunk of cash till ive drive the DCT box

Scott
LCi ? Picture 4 has the 7 speed DCT box Ahh that's what it'll mean then. LCi is the BMW "Facelift". On the 5 series the LCi versions had the same shifter as what is shown in pic 4. The pre-LCi had the other shifter
