To be honest, tye Whifbitz side intercooler I have was brand new this year, so replacing it for a much older SMIC would be a step back for me. But you should sell this no problem, if it is definitely a genuine CW SMIC it should be worth £200 ish as is.if you clean the end tanks up and Polish them, you will get more.

 

The side mount intercoolers, especially the Chris Wilson one, are very good. They are more efficient as they are ducted properly, and are less of a restriction compared to FMICs. Also, they are lighter, allow a working active spoiler, and crucially don't block the radiator. I am hoping that I can reliably run a stock radiator on my single within being unobstructed.

They arent less of a restriction J, they're help for less lag due to the area of volume inside though. A decent FMIC will out perform ANY side mount IC regardless of how good the design is. The difference is how well it cools a certain volume of air. The CWs are perfect for BPU and small single, past that you need a GOOD FMIC to keep the air temps down.

Front mounts have no effect on stance. A CW side mount will outperform a cheap front mount every time. Yes, you are making a mistake.

 

I did try offering that advice above but he just seemed to want to sell it. Nuffink sez I haz a turbo den a bling bling FMIC innit blud ;)

 

FMIC - all show, no go

CW SMIC - all go from a pro

 

What happens if you don't have an intercooler at all?

 

They arent less of a restriction J, they're help for less lag due to the area of volume inside though. A decent FMIC will out perform ANY side mount IC regardless of how good the design is. The difference is how well it cools a certain volume of air. The CWs are perfect for BPU and small single, past that you need a GOOD FMIC to keep the air temps down.

 

I'd go twin CW SMICs if wanting over 600BHP. FMICs are never ducted either.

A few have ducted them, I know Jevansio got good results when he ducted his FMIC, pretty sure DanDan, JayNW and Ibrar have done this too.

 

Thanks for clarifying Scott, I knew they were less responsive but I dint know the exact reason.

 

Is it even possible to run 2x FMIC on a Supra? I suspect there would be a significant weight penalty, plus the stoxk ducting is handed for the RH side. Interesting thought though :) certainly a consideration for anyone building a twin turbo UZ Supra.

As stated, these are nearly £1k new.

 

To me it doesn't look to be in too bad shape- a few bent fins from bits and bobs hitting it but none are missing or falling out.

 

If it was mine I'd be looking for at least £400. 2nd hand and in used condition, and also less than half price (not to mention if you wanted one you have to wait for it to be made to order)

 

 

I would also recommend reading up on them a bit to learn the benefits and keep it :thumbs:

Yes they are. What makes you think that? Anyone with a well setup FMIC will duct it appropriately.

 

I'm all for the SMIC, especially Chris's variant, but to try and bash a professional FMIC is just madness. An FMIC will outperform a similar quality SMIC every day of the week. The fact is that these SMICs are a great upgrade over stock and will allow a lot more power than stock.... once past that you NEED an FMIC to get the most out of the setup.

I went through the twin SMIC route with Martin Kirk on here a while back. I went through my thoughts about it in depth and thought there could be massive gains from a twin setup. I recommended using a slightly smaller SMIC though, an Audi pair or similar. I definitely think there could be benefits on the Supra depending on the setup you were after. I LOVED the engineering aspect of it all though, I wanted to see it done just for the sake of seeing it done and to see what it could do.

 

I don't know if the benefits would be greater than a decent FMIC setup but the fact that they would both be away from the rad would have to help race temps.

Very few bother to duct them, out of all the FMIC fitted by members on this site I would bet less than 20 have ducted them.

 

IIRC Jevansio was the first member on here to do this.

 

There's a genuine reason for that though. The FMIC needs a LOT less ducting than an SMIC as the bumpers stand. Especially when you move onto doluck, etc. If you want it to be purposeful, it needs to be ducted though.

 

My point still stands, just because people don't do things the way they should doesn't put fault onto the equipment used or its efficiency when used properly.

So we are agreed then, SMIC is better than an non ducted FMIC? Or not? :D

 

For Stock/BPU definitely. Small single there's a grey area, but it definitely won't make much of a difference. Serious power..... FMIC all the way.

 

Need to keep money in mind. You're only saving £200-£400 on a GOOD FMIC by getting the SMIC so you need to be sure your end goal is the sweet spot of the kit you are using. If your plans are 600HP+ then FMIC is the only choice IMO. SMIC will do the job, but there will be a restriction.
