Konrad Posted July 10, 2016 Share Posted July 10, 2016 If you've got facelift speedo/odometer, it might be a problem with buffering. Second hand speedo would probably solve your problem, you do not need whole cluster, speedo is removable. Another problem might be that odometer became stuck, I had this problem once on my old facelift, stripping and checking odometer helped, it's not hard to notice when it's stuck - especially when you take speedo out. If you are close to me, pop in and i can help you to check it over, I also think I've got spare speedo knocking around, you would have to change reset pin as old one is broke, but it was in good working condition. Alex_GT Posted August 23, 2016 Author Share Posted August 23, 2016 Just to update this again, I have got another dash cluster with the correct mileage, and I have swapped the speedo and the odo/trip within over to my car. At first I thought everything was fine as the odometer seemed to be working fine, but I think it is now rolling over in kilometres, not miles. I know the distance of my journey and it is saying I have done more miles. Furthermore, the speedo now does not show the correct speed, I don't think it's a case of the miles/kilometre conversion going wrong, as when the car is stationary the speedo shows 25mph. The faces are identical on the two clusters, and the part numbers are the same, so I don't know what is wrong now? Also, the fuel gauge doesn't seem to be showing the correct amount, but I've got no idea how to prove if the fuel gauge is working. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If so it's a mechanical issue with the speedo head. as you say the fuel gauge is out, too, i still suspect someone's had the needles off.... Turns out the needle was in the wrong place, the speed is still off slightly but it's closer than it was. The fuel gauge might be correct, but since the needle does not return to empty with the ignition off, there is no way of knowing I guess. To take them off use 2 spoons for even leverage underneath needle and they will pop out, just be careful not to bend anything Fuel gauge is easy one, fill car up to max and put it back pointing to Full mark. Speedo is a bit more tricky, I was using GPS to keep steady 40 or 50 mph (depends how comfy you feel) and just pop it in pointing to GPS value shown. RPM is as just easy, warm up the car and once it's idling at 650, put the needle in. I'm not sure if the fuel gauge is wrong, it just seemed that when the cluster was replaced the fuel reading was higher than I remember. However this morning when driving to work the needle was getting "stuck" at certain speeds. When I was slowing from 60 on the speedo, the needle was stuck for a couple of seconds before jumping down to the current speed, and it seemed to be doing it constantly i.e the needle was not showing a current speed, as though the signal is getting interrupted or something? Also, when stopped the needle was spiking on the speedo even when the car was stationary. I would never suggest driving and putting needle on in a same time Alex - you seems to have a buggered speed converter or speed sensor is playing up. I changed the speedo as the odometer was broken, now in the new speedo cluster the odometer works but nothing else does. That's another thing, the trip does not work either, when you reset it to 0000, all the numbers roll half way over to 1111 then it gets stuck. Why would the trip not work, but the odometer does? I thought the odometer was driven mechanically by the trip, so if the trip doesn't work, then neither should the odometer? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Konrad Posted August 25, 2016 Share Posted August 25, 2016 I assumed it is converter or speed sensor because needle on your speedo is spiking or getting stuck, which means that signal is somehow interrupted.
