jackso11
So my engine is finally rebuilt and will be going back in shortly (After a year off the road!) and I have only just now looked at my auto box that is going back in and though maybe I should change the torque converter? I don't really know much about torque converters, how often should they be changed? I presume as a certain age they are likely to start slipping? While its off I should probably change it right? Chris Bailey
I'd recommend changing the Autobox oil and filter, you have two options A full gearbox flush which will require I believe 8 litres of Automatic transmission fluid (ATF). Or you could drain the auto fluid from the gearbox pan, replace the gearbox filter and top up with fresh ATF. Which I think is around 5 litres. David P
As long as no muck has got in it, it'll be fine.
jackso11
Yes I will flush and re-oil, although I know some people say its best to just drain and top up instead of a full flush and change...any opinions on that? Its whether or not I should put a new torque converter on that I have no idea about.
jackso11
As long as no muck has got in it, it'll be fine. Thanks, should be ok then. Just in case, as it has been stood for a year attached to my old engine (in the corner of the workshop) while we rebuilt the new one (spare time only...hence taking a year!) is there a way to clean them? Chris Wilson
Just sit it on a bucket, neck down and it will drain almost all its contents out. But don't then store it somewhere damp. TC's either work or they don't, they are simple internally and if it worked fine before I'd just refit it. You do know it must be fitted loose inside the bellhousing of the gearbox, and not bolted to the flex plate when fitting engine or transmission? It also needs gently pushing in and turning until the notches on the end of the neck engage the dogs of the oil pump just inside the front of the transmission. it will then go in another inch or so. failing to do this will probably result in a knackered transmission oil pump. You don't NEED to fill it with oil before refitting, although some people put some fluid in. I don't as it gets messy. There will be enough oil in a used converter to lube things until the pump recharges it.
jackso11
Thanks Chris. It won't be me fitting it and hopefully the guys who will be fitting it already know all of that but I will pass on your words of wisdom to make sure
