Anybody work for a main dealer ? Looking for a career change and was thinking of car sales but the uncertainty of how much I will be paid is putting me off. Basically want to know what your base salary is and realistically what you earn in commission a week and what kind of money you get for each thing you sell. I am confident I can sell cars but I want to know how much I need to sell to achieve the salary I want. I know this is personal info so if you don't want to post here you can pm me and all correspondence will be strictly confidential. Thanks for your help :)

Not sure how much it helps but I went for an interview about 10 years ago to work for Car Giant & they advertise salary of up to 50k which interested me.

Turned out the base salary was £15k and the rest was commission, you earned such a small amount on car sales, the rest was selling insurance and warranty.

Hopefully the dealers themselves you get a better salary.

When I was younger I asked a car dealer (Manager/family friend) he said not to do it because it's a case of "when you're in you're in". Just didn't sound like he enjoyed it. Because of that I've avoided sales, working with targets and commissions seems massively unappealing. Probably better off in an administrative role for a dealer rather than doing the actual selling. might earn less but it'd be a more consisting wage and perhaps no performance based issues.

One of my friends works for BMW. I don't know how much he earns but he has just purchased his own 3 bed detatched house and drives a 15 plate 5 series MSport provided by the company. He sells anywhere between 5 and 15 cars a week generally.

I guess how much commission you would get depends on the marque. From what he tells me his commission is based on a percentage of the price of the car sold, so he gets more if he persuades clients to have all the extras etc than a base model.

If you're good, you can be earning a LOT depending on brand and dealer. I know of people on 60k in car sales. Although it is NOT consistent money. I'm trying to get into car sales myself atm. I got to the final stages of interviews in Audi Belfast and the base salary was something ridiculous like 10k and OTE was 50k+

That is some job aspiration, to become a lying, cheating, thieving scumbag (aka car salesman). ;)

Had 2 mates that tried this profession few years back, it was tough and very very cut throat. You will have to do anything to make a sale. The targets are demanding. It is not like luxury car makers where it is an easy sell, go to a supermarket and it is different.

I am a salesman for a main dealer and far from any of those so keep your generalisations to yourself.. Thats not a very pleasant way to talk.. About anybody for that matter.

A person packing boxes can be as you described.. Even an attorney.

Definitely an attorney.
