Gentlemen a very good morning to you all :D

Right, so here's the pickle, I have an Aristo and vvti Celica, both my pride and joys, both lovely and both costing a tonne of cash to use as a daily runner. I do a lot of run about driving so inner city (London) and the Aristo will drink £70 fuel and give 90 miles because it spends too much time in stand still traffic but is comfy and big enough for me to move things around in people/shopping etc. Celica is a lot better on fuel but still a 2 door coupe which I need to constantly put things in and out of so space is needed.

So time for a 3rd car at the end of the month:-

The requirement:-

1. Must be less than £1000.

2. Must be half decent on fuel. Dont mind a diesel.

3. Must have 4/5 doors

4. Look half decent (the Celica and Aristo look stunning, get my drift?)

5. Something not too old (as above image and also reliability)

6. Reliability is important, going be a bit of a lil work horse.

7. Cheap and cheerful to run, (low tax, insurance, parts if it goes wrong)

I genuinely haven't looked at any cars because i don't know were to begin, been too busy looking at brash expensive cars so don't even know what small cheap eco cars are out there lol. Was thinking a japanese hatchback but really dont know.

Lets see what you guys come up with!

THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH in advance for your time to read and suggestions.

I do this on a regular basis, my daily changes roughly once a year for the same kind of budget so I have a half decent idea on what's reasonalble for that budget.

2002 (ish age) Mazda6

Available for circa £1000

I had the 2 litre petrol TS2. Comfortable, spacious, decent boot. Around 35-40 mpg on a daily basis. Only problem I had was it failed an MOT on corrosion on the rear suspension mount areas and some other areas. You'd need to check for rot when looking at one. They also suffer from rust spots around the rear arches.

Other than that, was a good workhorse and mechanically never missed a beat.

2003 Seat Toledo 20VT

1.8 Turbo petrol

Available for circa £1000 - £1400

This is my current daily. Basically an Audi A4/VW Passat without the price tag.

Punchy and returns 35-40 mpg daily again. Looks pretty good and again decent space and reasonable boot. Not a hatchback though, so the Mazda wins on the boot accesibility.

Those are my last two dailys, from this year and last year.

Others I'd consider:

Seat Leon (Same as Toledo but not a saloon)

Audi A4

VW Passat

Honda Civic (saloon)

Toyota Corolla

Toyota Avensis

Those are what I was looking at earlier this year.

Sounds like a tough wish list. If you can compromise on one or two things, I reckon your choices would open up.

I would suggest a Perodua Kelisa, e.g.: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Perodua-Kelisa-1-0-EX-SUPERB-LITTLE-CAR-/181878012523

I don't know much about them, but I was looking at them when I was considering getting a cheap runaround for short 1-person journeys. They've got OK reviews on autotrader or parkers.

Great as an inner-city car I would think because of their size. You'd be hard-pushed to say it's good-looking though (criterion #4). I kind of like that in a runaround though: if it gets dinged in the car park, meh.

Not sure about its load-carrying capability either. Might be OK if the rear seats fold down.

Honda Accord, I had the V-tech S as a second car for a while, it has everything as a daily, space, performance and looks, due to the fact lack of use because I couldn't resist the Supra, instead of letting it rot I gave it to my pal to use, since April he'd change one light bulb and passed the MOT with no expense

thanks for that, will do some digging online....

the mrs i think would leave me if i picked her up in that lol - from the aristo to that! but thanks anyways, i budget super mini (city car) is a very good idea.

smart fourfour

parts are too expensive mate on these and they really aren't so reliable.

Id go for a b5.5 1.9 TDI VW Passat, have owned mine for nearly three years and its been a great work horse. Bought for 1.5k but can get them cheaper now, with FSH and 130 thousand on the clock. Still drives like new and has asked for no more than a set of brake pads and tyres after nearly 40k. Brilliant comfy cars.

May not look great but ticks every box for a daily IMO.

I also used to do this, if you can forget the good looks then Skoda Octavia Tdi, Ive had a couple and theyre comfortable, cheap to run, practical and easy to sell on.

Or if you want a City car, Seat Arosa TDi. 3 cylinder 1.4 tdi, 40 quid a year road tax, unreal economy

am currently looking at an octavia with the sport pack on it, its £1200 but looks decent and is a diesel!

I had one for years put nearly 230,000 on it and only fitted service and worn out parts in the time I had it. I only sold it last weekend. Estate looks better than saloon and it makes more sense if you haul loads of stuff about. I had the PD 130 Sport Wagon remapped to 160bhp and it was brilliant. Best all round car I've ever owned.
