Insuring Claim Time Limit Question

Hey all. Quick question

How long can you leave before letting the insurance know you have had an accident and can still claim?

Reason I ask is my GF Jo revered into some one on Monday. The lady she revered into kindly said she doesn't mind doing it privately rather through insurance as my Jo's excess is quite high.

The lady has been cancelling to meet at the body shop as she works in London.

Today she didn't even show. My GF got a txt later from the lady explaining that her phone was stolen and sorry she hasn't been able to respond.

But she wants to meet tomorrow at the body repair shop or shes going though insurance.

Issue is Jo is working tomorrow so can't be there while the lady goes.. So shes worried she is just going to say that shes going though insurance.

But when I spoke to my insurance years ago regarding something they said if you want to make a claim you have to report the accident within 24 hours.

Does anyone know if that a general rule or just my insurance company at the times policy?

Thanks

As I understand it you need to inform your insurance company immediately. That goes for the lady too though. 24 hours sounds like a standard limit. Not sure where that leaves you but I would definitely mention it to her as she's putting herself in a pickle as well :)

I guess it depends on the insurance company.

A couple of months back the handbrake failed on my daily, letting it roll into one of the work vehicles. Gave my boss my insurance details but they tried to go through the fleet insurance to save me the hassle. Turned out fleet wouldn't cover it so they went through mine in the end. This was a week later. I just got a call asking why I hadn't informed them, explained and everything was fine.

Also, if you don't use insurance to pay for the repairs on your car you won't have to pay excess. Excess is only applicable to your own vehicle repairs, not someone elses.

I had that worry too as the above was my first ever insurance claim.

It will depend on your specific policy/company. Have a look at your policy wording and the answer should be in there. I work as a broker, albeit dealing with home insurance, but I can say that there is no rule across the board with insurance. Each individual company will have their own rules really..
