MOT failed - corrosion

robin

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately the car failed the mot this year with some corrosion issues which have crept up quite quickly. The sills are a bit rotten in places, mostly toward the rear wheels and the panel between the bottom of the radiator and the bumper/under tray has rusted through.

From a quick google I believe it is possible top buy a new panel the runs under the radiator at the front of the car and cut out the old/spot weld this in - does anyone know the part number for this? (1st photo)

I am going to approach a couple of places to ask about getting the sills welded but judging from the photos does this look salvageable? Any recommendations in the tunbridge wells area?

I do hope they didn't fail that cross member??

Also, what looks to be the nearside rear inner sill doesn't appear to have rotted through?

Yes they failed on both sills front and rear so x4 as well as that front bit right under the rad.

The sills are definitely not in great shape but I can only see one actual hole, that said I think a couple of the others would have holes by next year.

I'd take it to a competent MOT station if I were you.

I've just purchased a 2 post lift so I can tackle all my cars underneath as well as I can the on top parts. I have noticed the exhaust shields on my Supra are quite corroded. Might post some pictures if there is nothing there that'd give nightmares. There shouldn't be as the only corrosion that ever gets a mention at MOT time is brake pipes and I'm covering that with copper next year along with new hoses.

Wish I had the space for something like that.

When you are sorted with the replacement bits you must get the car warm and high pressure fill all enclosures with "Waxoil". I did this 19 years back on my car and i have no rust at all.

"Waxoil" will also arrest any existing rust.

The only rust failure i had was a power steering oil pipe which was perfect either side of the rubber clamp, but inside the clamp it had held water and the pipe corroded through, had to make a pipe with 10mm copper pipe, no spares available. Godd luck with it. herbiemercman.

Once you get it fixed make sure you have the whole underside undersealed. Wire brush any old surface rust away then what I do is a couple of coats of satin hammerite then once that's dried a couple good coats of waxoil.

All the holes in the subframes and hollow bits of the chassis are the hardest bits. Ideally you need a high pressure gun to shoot it all in and cover as much as possible for a really good job. A guy that does my shot blasting swears by used engine oil. Heat it up and shoot it in.

That looks nasty.

People often say when you buy a Supra, never buy a car on how nice the wheels are or the kit is, get under the surface. Very true

Never a truer word spoke. Particularly with the age of the UKs and most of the imports in this country.

I personally have not seen a Supra that bad but they are old girls now particularly the early ones:( I suspect Keron has broken cars with better condition shells than the OP's:taped:

Good luck with the repairs, Welding in these areas used to be a common thing up until galvanised bodies came in. I have spent many a happy hour welding sills, floor pans and suspension areas in the past:cool:

Anything can be fixed.

Have you ever seen the sills of 90% of MX5s on the road!

MOT wise the rules state rot 30mm from any structural or mounting area of the vehicle is a fail. I.e 30mm from any of the trailing arm bushes or suspension components

30cm from steering, suspension, braking component mountings or seatbelt mounts.
