Guest Smyth
Hi All I noticed the other day when pulling up to a set of lights and I had the window down, there was sort rattle / scratchy sound coming from the engine but when the car is put into NEUTRAL or PARK there is no rattle or noise at all just the normal engine idle. When the car is in drive and you are pulling away no sound or noise even at high and low speed. The noise is only there when stationery and the car is in Drive or Reverse. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Paul

Mike2JZ
Could also be a rattle from the shield on the catalytic converter

Guest Smyth
It only seems to happen when the gearbox is engaged to drive or reverse. The engine sound is perfect when idle even when revving the engine. - Its as if there is something engaging the gear to drive and as its about to move its rubbing or grinding on something. Do the auto boxes have a pressure plate or clutch of some sort? Much appreciated for all the feedback Thanks
scott.wild
I had a rattle which turned out to be loose bolts on the flex plate, it did this at a certain revs (low revs) and when initially putting under load. Sound travels a lot and the wooden broom handle approach helped to identify the area.
Scooter
Mine did exactly this when the engine mounts went as David and I am alluding too. I'd try and view them from underneath, and see if the main metal cup part is sat on the subframe, there should be clearance.
