Annoying Rattle from engine when in Drive or Reverse (3.0 TT Auto)

Hi All

I noticed the other day when pulling up to a set of lights and I had the window down, there was sort rattle / scratchy sound coming from the engine but when the car is put into NEUTRAL or PARK there is no rattle or noise at all just the normal engine idle. When the car is in drive and you are pulling away no sound or noise even at high and low speed. The noise is only there when stationery and the car is in Drive or Reverse.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

It only seems to happen when the gearbox is engaged to drive or reverse. The engine sound is perfect when idle even when revving the engine. - Its as if there is something engaging the gear to drive and as its about to move its rubbing or grinding on something. Do the auto boxes have a pressure plate or clutch of some sort?

Much appreciated for all the feedback

Thanks
