cered
Volvo XC90 has always been the best in it's class, think the 2.2 diesel is the recommended buy Range Rover is always an option, but an unreliable one (Apparently... My boss has a 4.6 Vogue and hasn't had many issues)
fullthrottle
Vw touareg 5.0 v10 diesel 381bhp + 618Lbs/ft torque chipped this is my spare car plenty of room and comfort and you won't be disappointed with the performance if you get one. adnanshah247
we have a Rav4 that my sister has used for the last 3/4 years, 2nd most reliable car in the family after our landcruiser which God himself has wars with lol. has never broken down only time it once went wrong was the battery was nackered. has been in every form of car park and road accident you can dream of (women drivers) and my sister rags it, trust me. absolutely brilliant car and i refuse to accept any other suv is as durable and as reliable as my extended family has every brand mention and they've all had issues. quick, strong, seats can take every shade of vommit, poo, crisps etc. dad was just in the process of buying her a new car and she utterly refused saying i want another newer Rav4 or im happy with my current car. Abz
I'll PM you As Chris says the torque on modern diesels makes a big difference... Which part of the Astra have you out grown? I have driven Rob's CRV and on the way back me and the missus was saying how lovely it was. Fully loaded with all the toys inc heated seats, reverse camera and although I didn't rag it, joined the dual carriageway it wasn't exactly a slouch and didn't feel it's weight at all. I used to be the same regarding Landcruisers but my last one which was a 120 series 55 plate 3.0TDi had problems and only done 70k with FTSH Also had a re call for injector seals and oil strainer replacement. Can't say i'd be rushing to by another as there not a patch on the earlier 80 series 4.2 TDi
Hitbox Junkie
4.2TD Land-cruiser would be my SUV choice if i had 8k budget. Som comfortable and so much space. Although I would want automatic http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Landcruiser-Amazon-4-2TD-GX-MANUAL-DIESEL-7-SEATER-/121780549432?hash=item1c5aafb738:g:wnAAAOSwNNxWFES9

My dads landcruiser 2004 3.0tdi LC4 has done 330,000 miles since new, were first owners, since we had it once a year service and just now it came back from Toyota needing new callipers with its service which dad done and the toyota guys said its ready for another 250k miles lol, this landcruiser being our 3rd one has never skipped a beat like our previous 2. most reliable car in the world imo. SupraP-Z
There are so many to choose from, i work in export and drive most 4x4's on a daily basis from old tatty ones to brand spankers. My favourites so far are the lexus rx450h, VW touareg and the Landcruiser, the amazon is really nice too. Im not a huge fan, but the Landrover discovery is a lovely car too, tonnes of space, feels similar to the range rover. The diesels will trounce the petrol on performance unless the petrol is turbo'd. NA supra feels really slow in comparison to most newer diesel turbo cars ive driven (even the merc c220 diesel feels like it may give the NA supe a run for its money lol). Same goes for fuel consumption, i think the next car i buy is definately going to be a diesel - you want a 2 litre diesel as a minimum. It really depends on your budget, dont go for the flashier types, porsche cayenne (twin turbo is lovely to drive but we've had engines let go and gearboxes needing fixes) the Range rovers...dont get me started on those, though i tend to find the older supercharged v8 autiobiography are a nice drive albeit a bit boat like. These are expensive when things go wrong, but then a 4x4 is expensive to maintain regardless

hogmaw
Some great info here gents, thanks. At the moment it's the Honda CRV 2.2 diesel that tops the list, but we will see...
SupraAyf
How about a Toyota RAV4. They seem to be able to do most things. The new ones are as popular as heck in our area.

There's a bint round this way with a Landcruiser and she's always pratting about in Tescos car park, going round and around looking for a space big enough for it. Sometimes she gives up and sods off home again. The wasted trip's probably cost her 20 notes.

The CRV won't give him much more space so I don't see how getting one makes him any better off. The Landcruiser solves any space issues job done in my opinion and if you get the early ones you have stunning reliability to boot and 7 seats Never had any problems parking mine, just park a bit further from the front door
