Chris6t9
My dads just picked up his 63 plate van from ford from a recall on the oil pump and he made it just down the road before the engine seized up. No oil on the dipstick so its either pumped it all out or they forgot to put oil back in it. I reckon they will try and bodge it so they dont have to put a new engine in or want to put a new engine in it. I wouldnt be happy about a new engine already because it will effect the resale value so i would want a new van. Where do you reckon he stands? a98pmalcolm
If a new engine is the way and they try and FOB him him off maybe ask make a note of the engine number?
jcbt
Had similar to this with a gearbox on a Galaxy - we found the leak sir and it's fine now - got down the road and it seized Still no leak present they just didn't fill it up - morons and it cost them a new gearbox If there is no leaks get them to trailer it back to workshop and replace engine - whatever you do talk to the boss at the dealership and stick to your guns and don't get fobbed off for anything less than a new engine Good luck
Chris6t9
I just think a new engine is not good enough. They already have the van so making a note of the engine number is off the cards but originaly they tried to fob him off by asking if he had the service done with them! He barely made it out of there place and down the road!

Last case scenario getting the solicitor involved. Has anyone else known of anyone getting a whole new vehicle ?

Benjy
It's a massive, massive issue with these vans. They'd struggle to get out of it
Havard
Why would they ask if it was serviced there. They had taken on the recall under warranty, if it hadn't been serviced, surely they wouldn't have attempted the work as the van wouldn't have had a valid warranty. Dicks. H. Benjy
You can have your car serviced anywhere whilst under warranty, provided they use manufacturers parts and stamp the book. "Have you had it serviced here" is the first question in a line of questions designed to get out of their warranty agreement. But, with such a big issue with that Transit engine, all it would take is an independent engineer to look at the van and write a report saying "Mechanical failure due to defective oil pump" and it would be straight back to "Have you had any problems with these Transit oil pumps, Mr Ford?" Wouldn't worry, they've not really got a choice but to lob a new engine in it under warranty. If they try and squirm their way out, they're opening a massive can of worms! Chris6t9
Benjy what sid you mean by your previous comment it's a massive massive issue? The pump or something to do with losing all the oil?
Benjy
Those transits are prone to oil pump failure. I used to work at a Ford main stealer, and when I popped in a couple of months back, the service manager told me that they had done 30 of those recalls in a month. Half of which included engine replacement after failure of the pump. Google "Ford TSB transit oil pump". http://fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=158000
Scott
In this instance it appears that the pump was replaced to prevent the mechanical failure. What they didn't think of, was the apprentice not filling it back up with oil once it was replaced
Benjy
Either way, it drove in there, the fact that it didn't make it very far and has a complaint like "engine siezed" still points the finger directly back at the garage lol
Scott
I'm getting worried about garages now. I took my car to 2 places saying to them that I thought one of the tyres were out of balance and also that the tracking was out. Each time they gave the car back after a thorough inspection only for me to find the steering wheel still pointing 5 degrees to the right and the wheel wobble still in place. Had to take my car to a guy I don't like annoying with trivial stuff to put the wheels on his balance machine, one was 55 & 35 out ffs. I can live with the steering wheel being 5 deg out for now, as the actual tracking of the wheels is OK, but when they can't even get something as basic as a wheel balance right it's time to look at a new career. Finding someone who actually takes any time to listen and has some pride in their job is really rare nowadays. It's all kids who want to change exhausts and brake pads for a living, and even at that.... they make a James Hunt of that too.
stevie_b
@Benjy: my father in law's got an '11 plate Transit with the 2.2L Duratorq TDCi engine. Do you think this one would be affected? I read on t'internet that it's only ones with Euro5 engines, but I don't know if his one falls in that category (Ford's ETIS system doesn't say). Mk4Gaz
Yes, but a transit connect is only just big enough to fit a packet of 20 b&h in the back! Nowhere near big enough for what I need.
