krisgowing
Morning Seem's my starter motor has come to an end Stock one so 22 years old. Doesn't seem to be the contacts pretty sure the whole motor needs replacing. Don't think 22 years is to bad IMO. Don't know how many people still have the originals in. Just wanted to know is it as fiddly as it looks to replace the stater motor, It looks like i'll have to get a few bits out the way to reach it. Is it quite a straight forward job or a bit fiddly
stevie_b
I've heard it's a bit fiddly for a novice DIYer. I've never done it so I'm not speaking from experience.
Chris Wilson
On a ramp, or safely up high on stands it's quite easy to take off from underneath, but you need LONG 1/2 drive extensions and a GOOD 14mm wobble socket. Under 10 minute job on a ramp, probably 5 minutes if someone hasn't lost the wobble socket Disconnect the battery, the main lead is live all the time. krisgowing
Thanks guys, Will give it ago this weekend as I'm fed up of turning the key about 50 times and clicking before jumping into life.
mattdavies
Thanks guys, Will give it ago this weekend as I'm fed up of turning the key about 50 times and clicking before jumping into life. My one word of advice is burrow some extentions for your ratchet off some mates, I needed about 2ft of extension but then it was simple
Chris Wilson
Long steel bar, jar the *BODY* of the starter from above, in turn it jars the contacts a bit and usually works (for a while longer).
SupraP-Z
Alternatively just change the contacts, i had it done, starts first time everytime now
pedrosixfour
I'd say just always park on a hill, but you bought the wrong car for that to be an option.
SupraP-Z
When i had the starter go iffy on mine, thats what i did everytime. Rolled it down my drive and bump started it lol. Dreading parking anywhere flat!

krisgowing
Appreciate the help, My Saturday morning sorted now. My friend with his Supra last month with a similar issue, took it to a garage and said it wasn't the contacts the whole motor had gone. Charged him £200 inc VAT for parts and labour (brand new starter motor) Think that's reasonable or pricey for the work done? And could the whole motor would of gone or could it just been a white lie and been the contacts. SupraP-Z
Id be surprised if the whole motor had gone kaput, although it is quite possible parts being that old and what not. Upto a certain point, like most mechanical things - its a serviceable item. When mine went i contacted chris to see if he had a reconditioned one which he did, then i found out about the contacts which he also mentioned. For the price you pay, its a no brainer

It does look like a new one in the engine bay but all seems like an easy job if the contacts went, Surely a garage would of tried to refurb the contacts before replacing the whole thing. SupraP-Z
Well this is the thing about most things nowadays - if its bad or faulty its replaced rather than fixed. It is an easy job to do, can have in out and swapped in 10 minutes if you know what you are doing. I had no idea so i took it to a garage who coincidentally also owned a supra and he had changed his the other day. I gave him the contacts, took mine out, swapped over the contacts (they are just held in by nuts) put it back in and it fired first time and has done so since - only took him 15/20 minutes
SupraP-Z
Sounds like a rip off if it was a refurbed motor to be honest mate
krisgowing
He mentioned to the garage it's the contacts and then he was on holiday was told on its's the whole starter motor and came back to that bill, Seem's a little dodge to me but we know the garage owner and he usually sorts him out quite well!
