mugen_power
Hey guys, I've been doing abit of googling but couldn't really find much, so sorry if it's a stupid question. I'll be removing my manifolds and cam covers to send away for polishing and coating, what's the best way to protect the engine during the following 3 weeks? The engine is stored in an open barn so it's quite cold and I was worried about moisture, would simply taping the holes in the head suffice? What about the cam covers? Someone suggested wrapping the engine in some sort of pallet wrap to keep moisture out
RobUK
You just want to stop foreign objects from getting in, I've always used clothes/rags but anything will do within reason, I wouldn't be to concerned about "moisture" unless by that you mean rain/flooding.... Dnk
Just get a clean pillow case or similar kind of sheet and lay it over the engine. Bungy strap it or tie it in place Edited October 25, 2015 by Dnk (see edit history)
mugen_power
No rain can't actually hit the engine itself, was just thinking more along the lines of with the weather getting colder now if it started freezing or condensation settling into the cams themselves, didn't want anything to start rusting etc It's an open front barn, but the engine is right at the back so rain can't actually hit the engine but it can drive in with the wind so I'd imagine there's certainly damp air etc Edited October 25, 2015 by mugen_power (see edit history)
Al Massey
Is the engine still in the car of on a stand? Either way some tarpaulin will be ok
mugen_power
It's on an engine stand, so just plug the holes with some clean rags and tie a tarpaulin over it? Worth spraying some sort of oil or something over the cams or not?
a98pmalcolm
This may sound a daft idea how about tin foil? Coz then you can wrap it around for full cover. Must be a couple of pound for a extra long roll.
Benjy
Just wrap an old duvet cover around it
Dnk
You could get something like this if your not happy using a duvet or bed sheet http://www.aliexpress.com/item/ZX0041-Bike-Bicycle-Rain-Dust-Cover-Dust-Waterproof-Garage-Outdoor-Scooter-Protector-Cycling/32371131887.html
Chris Wilson
Spray the cams and buckets with motorcycle spray on chain grease. Light spray, stops corrosion. The black molybdenum sulphide type also stops scuffing on fresh engine builds until oil circulates. Bung the ports up with rubber gloves. I'd be more worried about rodents in a barn, they just love engine bays when it's cold and can do a LOT of damage to looms and hoses.
