a98pmalcolm
Hey peps. Ok I'm loosing the will to live and its not often I can't sort PC's out but I have lost count on the hours spent on this system I just built for some one and its truely beaten me. I have built loads of systems and never had an issue like this. The HDD im using is a SSD, this is a crucial one but I have tried a samsung one and had the same issue. As soon as I install SP1 on windows 7 it will find any updates haver that and its just left in "Checking for updates" I know there about 220 after SP1. I got it to work once but the chipset drivers fooked up the USB 3 drivers so had to reinstall windows.... again.... for the 30th odd time. You may think "just deal with no other updates" up the problem is is I plug in a device with no driver disk it windows wont find the driver. Works fine with windows 10 but we need 7 on this computer. I have read there is issues with SSD'd and windows updates. Has anyone got any ideas before I loose it Thanks in advance PAul
Ric
The only time i've not been able to update windows, due to just going on and on like that was because windows wasn't activated. When activated went straight in. I have a few pc's with SSD's in and dont see this problem.
MaveriK
I have never had an issue installing an OS with an SSD, even on older motherboards. To rule out the media being the issue have you tried the process with a stock hard drive? Have you looked at the BIOS version? Do you have anything else plugged into the motherboard that could be removed? Have you run chipset/device driver installs before the SP1 upgrade? Scott
Format, install windows SP1. Disable automatic updates, run "Windows Update" then checkfor updates. Go through the list checking 10 at a time and install them. Take note of the ones you are installing manually by their KB number. Once you get the issue you have been finding keep a note of the KBs that caused the issue. Repeat the process only start by installing the first KB that caused you the issue. Repeat until you find the one that did it. Repeat and install everything other than that particular KB. That's the long way around. The simple way for me would be to let you check for and install updates. That way you can select drivers and known updates such as IE etc. Out of curiosity, have you updated the motherboard BIOS? I had a ghostly error with an SSD HDD and updating the BIOS cured it.
Abz
Good point from Scott re BIOS. Also using tonnes of corporate machines on SSD & Windows 7 which update fine. You 100% sure it is the SSD? Not something else? Tried swapping to a SATA drive?
a98pmalcolm
Thanks for the reply guys. Yep its the latest bios.. And I have tried with a normal HDD and it was all fine.. If i install the chipset drivers and windows gets an update the USB 3 driver wont work. Even if i choose not to intsall the usb filter. I have an ssd in my system and its fine. I used the 2 ssds i tried for the new system in mine and same issue. So odd.
Scott
I think I'm missing what's happening here. You've installed the chipset driver, from the manufacturer website I presume? Why not install the USB3 driver from the manufacturer website too? I would be bypassing most of the windows update drivers as they'll be out of date now. Pete
Install on normal HDD - do all updates then image transfer it back. Try updates again?

MaveriK
Why does it need to be Windows 7 on this install?
a98pmalcolm
Windows 7 is what we want on this.. Ok think i see the issue. It was actually downloading updates But not showing it, only showing checking for updates. I realised this as the update icon was next to the shut down button. So i shut down and its installing 197 updates how odd. reboot the system and it says its failed in some updates and reverting. Failed about 20.. So will crack on with this after work and will update you on the situation. thanks
