Choosing a double din headunit.

So the time has come to order some Audio equipment for the new car, as the headunit curently installed is off back to its previous owner.

Now in my Na I have all pioneer stuff, and loved it, even though they did lack a bit of base untill I installed a sub. But putting that aside I think a pioneer double din is the way forward again.

Previously had a AVH-P4200DVD and cost £700-£800 back in the day!

With this in mind what is peoples opinion on this-

Seems great for the price.

Im looking for somthing that sit flush with the dash with minimal stuff sticking out, big of a screen as possible, must have a CD player, IPOD conectivity, USB and ideally an SD card slot but this is proving dificult! :(. Would be nice if I can set background on the screen too as I loved this feature on my old one.

Also a few pre-outs to allow me to wire and amp and sub in at some point.

Anyone have an recomendations? price range around £100-£400 but can stretch if its worth it.

One thing to bear in mind is security. If you have a big double din on show in an old car, it will be a magnet for thieves. And of its really securely fitted, they will wreck your dash and wiring trying.

I personally wouldn't consider a double din if the car is parked up in public alot.

Another one here for the F900bt, I had it on my Supra for three years and now its installed into my daily but deep down I want it back in the Surpra lol. But cant to bother to swap it over from one car to another.

Yup I've got a f900bt in my Supra too, cracking stereo

Unfortunatly the f900bt is rather dificult to get new by the looks of it, guessing its an old unit. The ipad is out the question as I want CD usage.

Not worried about it attracting attention either, had one in my old supra for 5 years no problem, also dont park in public car parks in it ever so no issue.

With this 20% off ebay Im going to go for one tonight so any more recomendations? if not may just go for the one linked.

People are still living in the past. Get yourself an Appradio headunit. Unbelievable bit of kit. The game has moved on so much further nowadays. There's no need for the headunits to carry all the tech when your phone has it anyway. Compatible with both Android and iPhone. If you have an android go for Appradio3 so that you can take advantage of ARUnchained. If you have an iPhone then I guess Appradio4 is best.

The value for money is night and day also btw.

The thing is im stuck in the past, my phone doesnt have it all on it. Its a POS I just want somthing that looks modern, and can play from my old ipod classic and ideally another source like a usb or SD. I currently use my SD slot all the time, and then just CD's.

I just want a head unit that plays nice with Windows. Yes, I cannot stand Apple or Android. I guess my only hope would be waiting for a Surface mini to be released and making it fit.

Double din isn't really that practical if you're still using CD's. A single din for ease of access would be the way forward, IMO.

It does all that stuff too :)

Not really much point in spending over £100 if that's all you want though.

That was just an example. They do CD/DVD versions too. As you say though, probably way past what you're looking for.

That looks quite decent actually.

Definitely the future. When I seen it I was looking at £1000 double din units. Went around the specs etc looking for the catch. Couldn't find one so bought it immediately. I only set it up a week or 2 ago and have only scratched the surface on what it can do, but it's brilliant. Knocks spots off my previous unit and the price cannot be argued with.

  • 5 months later...

If you have an IPhone 5 or later DO NOT buy an app radio 1-2 they are utter utter garbage I had them both after being assured they were iPhone 5 compatible at the time but they were not they are more a Samsung orientated device.

If you want GPS/USB/Bluetooth/Handsfree/SD/CD/DVD/DAB etc just go for one of pioneers units above the app radio but it depends what you like I like getting in the car turning the key and not having to mess about connecting stuff which most pioneer stuff with exception to the app radio 1-2 does.

I have not had an App radio 3 just to clarify.

I got this Pioneer unit in 2013 I can't remember the model but it does everything above and fits in the stock double din perfectly.

App radio 1-2 is garbage , SPH-DA120 with Apple car play I cannot fault but the Pioneer inhouse built App radio software is still garbage ; clunky , unresponsive and slow

Apple car play is excellent, I just use the Radio and apple car play on the SPH-DA120 , it is also supports Android & mirror link but as far as I am aware no aftermarket unit supports Android Auto yet

Since it has a HDMI port you can use Chromecast and basically turn it into a media/internet hub
