johnd-mkiv
I've got dreaded crunch when changing into third on a 6 speed box, this only happens when I'm in the high revs! sensible driving the change is normal. What's my options apart from driving sensible Is any UK company's doing box rebuilds? can parts be bought for this box?
j_jza80
Dude at AFR once mentioned a company that he had used to rebuild a getrag box in the UK,but I have no idea who it was. Would be worth asking traders like Whifbitz, SRD, JM Imports etc if they know anyone. Unfortunately, there isn't going to be a cheap solution. sidewaysdan
Sounds like the syncro. Defo won't be cheap
stevie_b
I'm going through a similar process with my W58 box. 2nd is crunchy when it's cold. Currently looking at getting the box opened up by a transmission specialist so he can look at what needs replacing, then order the parts in from Toyota. johnd-mkiv
A company local to me said I'm looking at £1100 to strip and rebuild + parts on top but doesn't want to get involved due to the power in running through it
Luxluc
My V160 is on it's way to Jacks transmission in the states. I have the same issue than you : 3rd gear scrunch when changing from 2nd to 3rd under boost and at higher revs. I would defo look for a real good transmission shop to work on the Getrag. Swampy442
I don't think its the labour thats bad, the parts prices are crippling, if you can get them.
Luxluc
That's true. £200+ for 1 OEM syncro ring. Jacks will replace all syncros for my Stage3, plus lots of other parts. Labour is only 50% of the cost ; the parts are around1500 USD alone.
crock
Toyota still sell v160 internals over the parts desk or they had them a few months back. i agree the prices are quite high

Luxluc
would you mind keeping me updated No probs mate. I should have the box back for X-Mas ; I will keep you posted once it's on the car and I had a go in the Supra.
add heywood
Jurgen had mine fixed after it was crunching into 4th gear. Sent it to WGT in Cheshire and he got a bill for £1800 Now WGT are quite pricey labour wise but anywhere will be an expensive job.
Hitbox Junkie
Worrying to see the prices but spending 1800 is still cheaper than buying new. But with the new 8speed at SRD or 7speed at whifblitz it will.be tempting to go that route if anything did happen in the future. AltHough the 6speed is just so dam good for the power levels. Luxluc
For £2000, Jack in the states do a complete Stage3 upgrade. I will keep you all posted about the outcome once the box will be back on my Supra.
stevie_b
@Luxluc: what courier will you use for shipping the transmission over to the US? I've been quoted $640 just for shipping.

herbiemercman
Hi Guys this thread is quite alarming, mega bucks, much more expensive than exchange auto boxes and used boxes for mercedes cars etc. What sort of mileage have you on the clock ? if it is less than 100k, then are you hammering the car ? I have a 5 speed box with 42k on the clock, and i change gears properly, BUT i have a vicious clutch which is grabby and must put unavoidable stress on the box which i did not have pre NA/T. I was under the impression it is high torque which causes the most damage ? Finally, what the hell do you do if the box returns from USA and the box does not operate properly, what is the guarante ? I was under the impression it is high torque which causes the most damage ? Finally, what the hell do you do if the box returns from USA and the box does not operate properly, what is the guarante ? Some good questions here. My personal situation is that my car has about 110k miles on it. I'm sure most people claim this, but I change gear very sympathetically. I've never drag-raced, and never done any kind of competitive driving, track days, or anything like that. The car has standard power and torque. It's all standard: clutch, cats, airbox, etc etc. Looking back at some of my old threads on here, I was asking about a crunchy gear change in 2006! Then, I did more miles in the car and the issue goes away once the box is warm. Now, I do a very short commute so it's much more prominent. Whatever's causing it, I don't think it's got any worse in the 9+ years of my ownership.
