Scott
BMW was in for it's MOT today. Got 3 advisories. Check this out.... 1. Parking brake lever doesn't have much adjustment travel left. - The BMW is self adjusting, it'll click in another point when it needs to. 2. Child seat base in place, unable to fully inspect the seat belt. - This is an interesting one, 4 child seats for next year then 3. Undertrays in place, can't fully inspect components. - Really? Undertrays on a car, who would have thought!! On the plus side, having passed an MOT with the most anal tester I have witnessed can only be a good thing lol. cered
Sounds like Halfords/Kwik Fit... Take it to a real garage?
Scott
Well he's obviously paid per hour. Paid per sharp intake of breath methinks Sounds like Halfords/Kwik Fit... Take it to a real garage? Pretty good place I took it to for servicing, etc. Cooper Brothers. A company that will fire it's employees if they don't use the torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts/bolts. The MOT "guy" is his own entity I believe though. Supra DEFINITELY will never be darkening their door though
ripped_fear
Hes doing his job to be fair, they aren't legally allowed to touch a child seat. I've known dodgey dealers to put child seats in the back so the crap seatbelts don't get checked. And the under tray is a common thing these days too. If its not noted It will be the tester in trouble.
Benjy
That's called "an arse covering exercise".
Ric
I get this on the audi all time, they are not able to remove undertrays, child seats etc so have to be noted.
Scott
That's called "an arse covering exercise". Indeed. I get this on the audi all time, they are not able to remove undertrays, child seats etc so have to be noted. I understand that but the whole point of an MOT test is to make sure the car is safe for the road. Putting down 3 ridiculous advisories makes a mockery of what he is doing. It's a cop out to make sure, as Benjy says, he's covered should anything go wrong. I've never had pointless advisories before, it's always been things near the end of their life or corroded brake pipes...... useful information that will allow you to make your car safer. - - - Updated - - - Hes doing his job to be fair, they aren't legally allowed to touch a child seat. Benjy
We don't have to advise anything at all, as it is only our opinion. But for instance, if a tyre is borderline pass or fail, we advise it incase they get pulled by DVSA on their way home. At least that way we've noted that we've looked at the tyre and made our call. If we're wrong, you get less of a telling off. If you miss it, the rollocking is a lot more substantial.
Style
I get the loud exhaust advisory annually without fail
Swampy442
MOTs vary so wildly, my GTR, just about every psst MOT mentions the under tray, the last one didn't. I bet if you went to another tester you'd get different/no advisories
Abz
Pretty funny that Scott I have to agree it is pretty nonsense that MOT testers have to put comments like that down just to cover their backs, the MOT body should be working WITH them, not against. Hitbox Junkie
That's funny putting child seats in all seats haha
evinX
When I had a veilside front on, the previous owner got advised and I didn't. He also got advised on a split dust cover...that wasn't split and is still fine 3 years on :/ ...Nutters.

People on here have Veiside spoilers and get forum "Take them off" advisories- warranted too IMO That is one anal retentive man that MOT'd your car Scott. He must be: 1) Bored 2) A riot down the pub. ianhid
So if the car had a custom under tray that was completely flat the length of the car, you wouldn't be able to look under it for problems? Even if it was blatantly made of thin cheap plastic to prevent exactly this and then removed afterwards?
Tsia
I got an advisory for having mismatched tyre widths (F/R) once, on the Supra.

As long as it's fixed safely and securely. - - - Updated - - - I got an advisory for having mismatched tyre widths (F/R) once, on the Supra. Pete
I got an advisory for having mismatched tyre widths (F/R) once, on the Supra. Muppet tester. That only applies for the same axle.

Even if it was blatantly made of thin cheap plastic to prevent exactly this and then removed afterwards? I have this issue every year with my Smart roadster coupe, it has a plastic under tray running from the front to just ahead of the rear axle, didn't stop me from getting an advisory on a corroded sump though, the tray didn't cover that! Benjy
Isn't that what I said? The way it's worded would imply that you thought it was an advisory. But potato/potarto...
Tony
Pretty funny that Scott I have to agree it is pretty nonsense that MOT testers have to put comments like that down just to cover their backs, the MOT body should be working WITH them, not against. It is to cover the tester from the general public who dont maintain there cars & think the MOT is as good as proper servicing, ie a rotted brake pipe covered by a undertray splits & the driver has a accident. sues the tester/garage. The mot is very basic check, some of which has no relavance to safety. But untill they let the tester's take parts off to have a proper look?? what can you do? That would put the cost up & the general public would not like that.
