HELP! Standard clutch slip, or is something else???

I hope somebody can help, I have just bought a white supra twin turbo 6 speed manual, and have a huge problem.

 

It started off, that the clutch didnt bite until the pedal was at the top basicaly, but the car went ok. but even within about an hour, when you press the throttle just the revs go to about 3-4000 and then suddenly the car pulls as if the clutch is engaging late.

 

now, i cant even get the car moving from pulling away in 1st gear until the revs are about 5000, and once again, the car then shoots off. its the same as you go up the gears. loads of revs until about 5000, and then you move.

 

is this, clutch? if so, knackered plate?, cover? slave cylinder?

 

i want to know so i can just sort it, im assuming its clutch plate and was going to buy and fit a new one.

 

ALSO...THE WHOLE TIME, ALL YOU CAN SMELL IS CLUTCH!

Sounds like the clutch is dead :( not too sure of the exact bit.

I guess the whole clutch assembly will need replacing and the flywheel checked.

 

I've been told that to replace the clutch is relatively simple.

 

Whifbitz will be about 15 min drive (just off M25 enfield) from you if you need somone to fit it. Phoenix are in Watford

 

Gimme a shout if you want to meet up sometime, I'm quite close to Welwyn.

 

Someone will come along shortly with more info.

If it's slipping that much then the flywheel will certainly be warn (although the fly supports less load than the clutch plate it is still a part of the 'sandwhich' that is the clutch - and so will still wear away at a set rate).

 

Also if it's worn to the point where the clutch retaining rivets are showing through above the clutch plate they will have scored lines around the flywheel.

just spoke to phoenix, they said id probably need flywheel, which seems strange, never need one before when replacing clutch on other cars. clutch and flywheels fitted about 850 pounds, and a 2-3 weeks wait.

 

someone has mentioned it could be rear diff, not clutch. either way the car is immaculate. and was cheap. im still happy. i new the clutch was on its way out. its just the wait to get it done and the fact i need a flywheel as well.

the funny thing is, it stinks of clutch when im driving,BUT it does grip at high revs and one it does its absoloutly fine, between 5000 and the limiter, i can rags it to bits and it grips. which is strange...theres no way of adjusting tho is there, it must be buggered. its strange because when i test droe it days before it felt sooo much better, then suddenly, amost in an evening it went like this.

There is some adjustment on the clutch pedal itself, but this does not sound like an adjustment issue. If your clutch is gone then the flywheel will be probably be chewed to crap.

 

I HIGHLY recommend you get it to Phoenix, at the very least for an inspection. Mark knows what he is talking about and has properly sorted some tricky gearbox/clutch problems for members recently.

Clutch worn out, the more you drive it the more likely it will also need a new flywheel. is it an N/A or TT? the N/A, unless it's a late 6 speed one, has a much more basic flywheel than the dual mass one on the TT's. Why doesn't it slip at higher revs, you ask. It's because the peak torque is at lower revs, and at peak torque the clutch has the most work to do.

Exactly the same symtoms I had back last November. Accelerate - the revs climb and but you're not going any faster.

 

My flywheel was completely knackered - had heat spots on it. I replaced with the clutch with a RPS Street Sport Clutch & the flywheel .. I went with a new stock flywheel.

 

I didn't like the idea of the noisey ball-bearing noises that comes with lightened flywheels - that make the gearbox sound like there's something wrong with it.

 

My RPS Street Sport cost £400 if memory serves. The stock toyota flywheel was £350 and the clutch bearing was £30.

 

So - for brand new parts ... it was about £800 all inc vat.

 

And what Homer says ... Phoenix are a great bunch of guys. Highly recommened. What is rare with Phoenix is ... Mark/Paul will take you under the ramps and show you the work they've done or any problems they've found.

 

They're 60 miles from me - but I'd happily drive to Watford .. for peace of mind - I know they have the expertise and will throw straight dice with their customers.

Hi mate ..

 

The Flywheel came from Toyota in Kidlington (01865 - 291333 ask for Steve Manley or a guy called Adrian - he's the parts manager) .. it's the same place that CJ has set up a repartee with the parts manager for discount.

 

£350 was the price I paid - but that was before CJ managed to get discount.

They will post the flywheel to you as well - if you want ... though weighs an absolute ton!

 

Yes, the single is definately worth it! :) Pulled the pin a few times. Even 1.1 Bar from the T61 is a quite abit fair faster than decatted stockers. :) Am buying Terry's TurboSmart eBoost Controller ... and a few other odds'n'sods .. in a couple of weeks - then we'll see 1.4 Bar ....... :woot: ... then we'll see RLTC !

 

Recommened mate! If you face the unfortunate position where your stockers are on they're way out ... go single!

my car is 93' 6 speed TT, so will need the lot i assume. how bad does a flywheel sond then?

Do you mean a lightened flywheel ? From what I've heard from other people - a lightened flywheel can make your gearbox sound awful. Very noisy.

 

I remember chatting to TLicense about his RPS lightened flywheel .. and he said if he had the choice again of fitting lightend or stock ... he'd go stock.

 

I guess the lightened flywheel would make the car rev faster than with the stock flywheel as there is less rotational mass spinning.

 

Other more techie people will be able to comment. Give Phoenix a ring .. Mark/Paul will give you as much advice as you need .. from flywheels to sourcing parts.

i was considering buying an nsx once upon a time but it had a worn clutch. I called around and some garages offered to 're-engineer the clutch' (ie. bring the old one back to life by machining it). any views on this route as a much cheaper option? ok you still may have to buy a new flywheel...

Snake oil. Once the material is gone - it's gone!

 

Edited to add - if it's a facing issue it will be the flywheel. This cannot be refaced.

Quite. I had a slipping clutch on another car, & tried to have the flywheel skimmed when the clutch was changed, but the heat created had 'tempered' the metal making it impossible to skim. I was lucky & was able to retain the same flywheel. If you continue driving yours as it is, you may not be so lucky.
