ben_harmer32
Before i bought the car it had been sat for a while. The previous owner said he had charged the battery as it was dead. Has worked fine fr the 2 days i've owned it. Driving today and i got a number of warning lights on the dash (ABS, Oil, CAT Heat?, big red triangle) and the power steering went. i pulled over and turned the car off. Went to restart and nothing. Managed to get a jump start and limp the car home. some of the warning lights were back on but not all of them and power steering was intermittent? I'm hoping this is all related to a dead battery but can someone please advice?
RobUK
Check the aux belt and the crank pulley as they are known to fall apart and start to slip.... Search for tipex test and you can then rule that out....
RobUK
Also you need to read the error codes, if you search 'error codes' there is a topic on how to read and what they mean....
supra900bhp
Possibly your alternater as mine was fine for years drove it on the Saturday fine started it Sunday morning and Blackpool lights tested battery at 12.67volts running was 10.37volts testing back of alternater and showed 0.38volts so fooked swapped it over with new one and been fine and kicking out 14.57volts But odd to lose power steering though if is alternater that is more as rob said separated in separating crank so slipping to lose power worth checking both as if crank pulley comes off it will do damage!! Good luck in finding problem matey
ben_harmer32
I thought of the alternator went the car would die as soon as the jump leads were dissconnected?
ben_harmer32
Checked the belts they seem right and in good condition. Can't find the ropes test though?

RobUK
I thought of the alternator went the car would die as soon as the jump leads were dissconnected? Need to check the crank pulley, if that doesn't turn, you have no alternator charge, air con or power steering......
ben_harmer32
Just started the car again and the revs are bouncing all over the place.
rider
Just going on what Rob said about the crank pulley it has a grooved Bakelite type insert that on my 18 year old car had disintegrated allowing the belt to lose tension. Replacement aren't cheap as they are harmonic balancer. I ended up importing one from a Toyota dealer in the USA.
Benjy
Probably the crank pulley. Put a tipex mark on the bit the belt runs on, and the back piece and then run the car, see if the lines move.
ben_harmer32
Does the belt on the crank pulley power the alternator and power steering pump?

ben_harmer32
And i'm guessing the water pump which is why i was getting over heating warning lights. I will look when i get home from work, guessing it will be easy to see as none of those belts will be moving. Is this the part i need? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191682286371?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&fromMakeTrack=true

Toyota UK charge nearer to £250 for the pulley, you can find it cheaper from Toyota abroad if you don't mind a few days for the part to be delivered. Took almost 2 weeks for my USA derived part to arrive via standard air mail and clear customs.
Ric
OEM toyota pulley is 199 from TCB parts.
rider
OEM toyota pulley is 199 from TCB parts. That looks a keen price for the UK. Part number is 13407-46020 if you want to scout around. I can't remember the price I paid as its a year ago now but I saved about £60 over Toyota Oxford quote after the Duty Tax payment.

ben_harmer32
How long do I need to run the car for when doing the tipex test. Had it running for couple of minutes and the line still lines up.
RobUK
Idling or have you revved they car to simulate a drive around?
ben_harmer32
I reved it as well. All seems ok. Got the AA coming out now as remembered I had gone start. So they can eliminate the battery and alternator hopefully.
