heckler
Guys/Gals I'm looking at getting a NAS setup for films and music (around several TB) and some file back up. Whats the best out there that's not silly price (£200-£300 area)? I've been looking at the QNAP HS-210 - any other suggestions?
scott.wild
The synology NAS boxes are pretty good, take a look on dabs.com or scan.co.uk. I guess a lot depends on what raid level you want to run, if you want to run email server, cloud server, remote access, plex server. Synology ds214 at 2 x 4tb or 8tb is pretty good value. Abz
I would also recommend looking into the Synology range like this. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Synology-DiskStation-Desktop-Network-Attached/dp/B00QKFZODW/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1443222047&sr=8-5&keywords=nas+synology Also what level of RAID you want for protection will influence your decision and how many bays you go for. Personally RAID 1 is more than enough for home protection. I have mine hooked up to the TV and it is perfect way to manage a movie collection, especially if you have a smart TV. heckler
That's pretty much the plan with a smart tv. I'm not really upto speed with RAID configurations....
Abz
That's pretty much the plan with a smart tv. I'm not really upto speed with RAID configurations.... Basically it is the level of protection you want in terms of if a disk failed. RAID 0 = No protection, data is put across all the drives, best performance. RAID 1 = Say you get a 2 bay NAS, each disk will be mirrored. So if one disk fails, it doesn't matter as you'll have data copied on the other disks. RAID 2 - 6 = These are all different RAID methods and unless you are looking to purchase an expensive NAS box with loads of drives then these won't matter. This has a bit more of a detailed answer, with some pictures too Si. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels

MaveriK
I am using the Netgear 102, as you know, with 2 3TB drives in mirrored, not missed a beat. What is wrong with your current setup? Or have i got the wrong member??

MaveriK
Whoops, sorry. I got the Netgear 102 from Dabs with a free 1TB hard drive thrown in which I sold to reduce the purchase. I then bought 2*3TB drives for the system. This services my PC for data and music, the PS3 for music and films and pictures and my mobile and tablet for music. The system will email me if there are any errors on the drives so I can replace. You can run lots of other software on the unit itself emule, couch potatoe etc. I think its brilliant for the price

I use it for my everyday files plus as a media server. I also use the built in web server to run my home security system. I also have a much older ReadyNAS Duo which I use as a backup drive (the backup are automatically handled by the 102). I think the Netgear stuff is very capable and keenly priced, but the Synology stuff does come very highly rated.
Pete
My next one will be a Synology. Superb app add-ons make it much more useful than your average NAS.

Apps are great with the Synology, the user interface is straight forward and easy to use and it's pretty much plug and play. Highly recommend it.
