Exhaust (N/A) - 3" pipe... should get 3" muffler or 2.5"?

Hi guys,

I've got a question re: muffler for my N/A Supra.

My Supra came with an HKS Super Power flow intake and Kakimoto 3" catback exhaust and muffler when it was imported from Japan. The Kakimoto muffler is buggered, its wool internals are coming out and I am planning to change the muffler. I temporarily remedied this by putting its silencer (overall, not a very good remedy).

Having read through some suggestions that having a 3" exhaust on an NA is not recommended due to ?loss of power/droning/very noisy exhaust... I am thinking of getting a smaller muffler (2.5") with a 3" to 2.5" adaptor. I have no idea how this will affect my system/car performance/experience. Would it be recommended to do so? or should I just stick with a 3" muffler?

p.s. Unfortunately, purchasing an entire catback system is out of the picture as it would be too expensive. I am just thinking of replacing the muffler... Cheers.

2.5" on an NA is suitable for both power, and noise. 3" is always really loud, and annoyingly loud.

If you have just a muffler, it shouldn't make a huge difference even if it's 3", as the 2.5" system will restrict flow.

There isn't a turbo housing to reduce noise, so the NA throws noise out.

If you stay NA, get a 2.5" system. But if you've had issues of it rotting or needing replacement, just take the plunge and buy a full 2.5" stainless system. Whifbitz provide a nice 2.5" system either single or twin box that sustains time very well indeed. Nice 304 material.

Cheap eBay systems won't ensure you get decent steel.

Thanks for your advice, will get a 2.5" xforce cannon muffler today. Unfortunately, I am based in New Zealand and supra parts here are somewhat a rarity. I'll probably get the exhaust custom made if it proves to be cheaper than getting an aftermarket full exhaust. :v

You sure its a 3" and not a 2.75"? The Kakimoto N1 i have for sale is 2.75" and is basically only a back box, that mid silencer does sweet F all. On what i've been told (came with the NA i bought) its stupid loud, Id echo Noz above but with a twin box for an NA which was on what i had and made a lovely noise whilst not being obnoxious.

I think its the same thing... so, I guess it is 2.75. Yeah, it is really loud... annoyingly loud (with the muffler buggered).
