Im at wits end with my Aristo! hasnt started for over a month, please guys help!!!

Ok so here's the full story, my aristo single turbo converted with a GT35R (year 2000, vvti auto) ran beautiful, powerful and a lot of fun.

Problem 1 - Suddenly, on a cold start, i would start the car and the car would jump and hold at 3000rpm regardless of me putting my foot on throttle. I would have to switch the car off and pump the throttle and then it would start and idle at its normal level.

Problem 2 - I started to realise that on idle sometimes the engine would stutter, as if its miss firing. i would drive and it would go back to normal on and off. On boost it was perfect.

Now, after lots of research i found that problem 1 is down to the vvti having a fly by wire throttle and the my throttle body maybe nackered. Problem two had stumped me. Eventually its irregular running got worse until in the garage the car refused to start.

What have i done so far:-

1. Wasnt sure if the fuel pump was a genuine bosch so bought a new one from Lil Num which was guaranteed working and fitted.

2. swapped coil packs and leads and ignitor pack from another working aristo, still no go.

3. disconnected the hks fcon V ecu and ran direct off my ecu to see if it changes, nothing.

4. swapped the original ecu with another aristo to see if my original ecu could be nackered, nothing.

5. changed the plugs to brand new ones.

6. checked the timing which is bang on perfect not a single degree out.

7. pulled the crank sensor out and still very magnetic and no sign of problem there.

8. checked injectors, rail and fuel pressure regulator - all good.

9. Throttle body swapped with a refurbished genuine part.

The car still refuses to start!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yesterday when speaking to Dan from Whifbitz he advised that the timing pulley comes away on the vvti engines and causes these issues, can somebody please explain in detail about this and their experiences and any more ideas ???

All grounding, electrics and fuses have also been checked.

Im genuinely out of ideas now and tried none stop for 3 weeks to get it going to no avail! i hope one of you boffins can help.....

Thank you so much in advance fella's...

sorry forgot to mention this, yes i do have a spark, but i think only sometimes, like i had a plug connected external, didnt spark but then later when it got darker it did, i think its down to us being blind during the day I think its intermittent.

the cylinders are flooding though, i took the plugs out last night when it just almost turned over and the plugs were soaking with fuel shortly after i cleaned them before hand and popped them in.

Your mechanic could not fine any issue !

Are there any error codes showing

buddy 2 mechanics are totally stumped, had it at one garage who gave up and the 2nd one is scratching his head, hes a good friend of mine and helped me build my single supra years ago, this vvti crap is really annoying us.

there was fault codes for the throttle body but they have now gone since the swap. other than that nothing else.

How frustrating for you, not many things left to check/change

How are the vac hoses, no splits/no loose hoses?

Did you change/check the EGR

checked every single vacum line, i dont see why a vacuum line would stop it starting, boosting yes maybe but not starting.

so frustrating mate i cant begin to tell you, might just get it trailored to whifbitz.....

(whats the egr :( )

Thanks J I'll check all the grounding again and as far as the over fueling goes the injectors are doing there job but the engine seems like it wants to do only 1 of the two jobs, fuel or spark not together :(

I'm not a supra newbie but this car has really baffled me, the 1st gen 2jz (without vvti) was a doodle to work on, I don't know what Toyota have done with this crock of shi* - Never ever going to buy a vvti 2jz again, EVER!

An oscilloscope on two channels, one on a cam sensor, the other on the crank sensor, will show if the timing star wheel is loose. The garage wouldn't even need to lift the bonnet or get their hands dirty.

But I would suspect the drive by wire throttle myself.

i have changed the throttle body now Chris, since the time i wanted to buy brakes from you, till now this car has refused to run! im slowly loosing my patience.

The throttle *BODY* is just one half of the drive by wire, it ties in with the two reverse action potentiometers on the throttle pedal assembly as well.... This is one of those jobs where you need to pay someone with the right gear and knowledge to diagnose it, as you say, it's getting on your nerves and you are just stabbing in the dark (in the engine bay...?) :) If the plugs are wet they may never fire even a perfect engine, so you need to consider that, too.
