craig l
Has anyone owned or had experience with this car ive been considering getting one. Ive looked at rs6s but they seem an unreliable money pit or an rs4 but the s8 seems a better car. Theres one in W+M motors Guildford with 85000 and a decent price does anyone from this area know this garage. Theres one 10 mins from me with 108000 but slightly dearer which is an easier option. Id probably have to sell my 6sp single after I bought this though.
Chris Wilson
A customer has one and it's been a total money pit. Plus, in my limited experience of driving it, the engine is really a revver with limited torque and out of place in the gargantuan, heavy body shell. Not sure if it's a good sports engine looking for a light chassis or a luxury barge looking for a LOT more torque...
Abz
Colleague has both an S8 V10 & an RS6 and both are money pits! His RS6 set fire to itself after one lap of the Nurberg recently.
Havard
Audis are not what they used to be. Then again, is any car these days. H.
j_jza80
The engine is a work of art, but as Chris said it is not suited to the heavy S6 and S8. I've thought about buying an S6, just as an affordable way to get that engine, but I've heard some horror stories. Audi looks with lamborghini running costs. mclarenross
have a look at the Audi a8 4.2 diesel and get it remapped, that's what I've done and my car fly's (just as quick as the s8 with loads more torque) and still does 42mpg on the motorway! Chris Wilson
That seems a much more practical proposition, although I have to say VAG stuff seems pretty dire in the reliability stakes, and repair costs / parts are very stiff if you can't DIY. Jellybean
My friend Ian has the S8 V10, really nice car but $$$ to maintain ; my other mate Terry has the S6and generally most RS models through out the years Cat sensors , t chains, tensioners , oil pumps and most bloody jobs need the engine out ; 20 hrs labour and it cannot be rushed , @ 7K euro; they are eye watering to expensive to fix, he also said is you have the ceramic discs, they need replacing every 7 years due to sun exposure @ 4-5K , most get a steel setup and flog on flea bay Another of Terrys friends treated himself to a new TDI 3.0 , he went in for a normal service, car was 3-4 years old at this stage and 60K KM ; audi said the tensioners needed replacing , engine out @ 8K euro with new parts Single Supra ownership is cheap in comparsion

You should see how they look after a few years of being bolted into a forklift! Whatever can't eat itself through normal use usually has an electrical meltdown with the same result! craig l
That's not good news went for a drive in it today beautifull car wasn't to impressed with the power compared to supra but least it doesn't fishtail all over the place. It has ceramic brakes that look pretty new full service history miltek exhaust, fuel costs don't bother me I don't go anywhere only do about 5000 miles a year but everything else worries me if its going to be expensive to fix. Only thing wrong with it is drivers door sensor doesn't work neither does the parking sensors.
j_jza80
Have you considered an e39 M5? Or an Aristo.
Chris Wilson
Make *SURE* it doesn't have any sort of engine vibration. The oil pump is at the back of the engine, driven, as is VAG's won't, via a long hexagonal key, like the diesel 2 litres. The hex shafts seem to be made of toffee and start to round off due to torsional vibrations. When they do wear you first get an engine vibration, minor at first, gradually getting more noticeable, then after that, the things round off altogether. Just like the 2 litre diesels you then get no oil pump drive, and the engine's a gonner. Doing a pump (it wears internally along with the drive hex...), on the V10 is *NOT* a trivial job, in fact it's a bit of a nightmare. Needless to say parts are frighteningly dear. LOTS of electronics, all of dubious reliability, and CAN BUS, so if one bit of the wiring goes iffy it takes out oodles of stuff. Definitely one for the very very brave I'd want to buy it for peanuts and then take my brave pill every time I used it.

craig l
Thanks for the advice and im not very very brave that's gave me second thoughts, I did think about the m5 as well but assumed that would be expensive to run as well. Im not a harsh driver and only do about 4000 a year never on motorways only use the car for going to the gym and shopping on sunday so im thinking not much would go wrong. I had the same brakes on my supra for over 7 years since I bought it only reason I changed them is cos the calipers seized they still had plenty life in them.Thats why I think the s8 might be fairly trouble free. j_jza80
M5 will potentially be cheaper to run than the S8, and it will be a much nicer drive.

Havard
Ive never been a fan of bmws tbh never owned one but an m5 is a nice car You may find that their engines, especially performance ones are a world away from the Audis. I was looking at R8's or an RS4 but the number of reports of engine issues and suspension failures, made me go BMW. The S54 engine in the E36 M3 and the Z4M is one of the best sounds I have heard in a car. Although the Cayman GTS has just changed my mind about that but I can't afford one. If I were going big Audi, I would look at older car. H.
