How is it best to pay for goods ie pay pal

I have been looking for a new gearbox and have put wanted posts up on here and on driftworks. Yesterday I was messaged by a guy on driftworks with a complete setup for a reasonable price the only problem is he is in malaysia and so are the parts. I sent him my number so we could chat via Whatsapp and his number is a Malaysian one and he sent me lots of photos and whilst studying here worked at jm imports. He seems to be honest and sees ok but then I don't want to be at the end of a scam. He has suggested payment via PayPal, and my question is, how safe am I as a buyer sending money that way.

I know it's better to not send it as a gift but to send it as payment for goods I think. Any advice welcome.

Thanks

George

Honestly, that sounds like too much of a risk to me unless anyone you trust is willing to vouch for them.

However, if you are going to get them to send you an invoice through PayPal first, detailing everything in full, including the method of postage and the type of insurance and tracking to be provided, that way you have that to fall back on if anything goes wrong

Be very careful. If this was a company you were buying from then it would be no problem, you can just pay as little as 1p on a credit card and the rest bank transfer, and you would be covered for the whole amount by the credit card under section 75. If its a private sale then I'm not sure how you are covered.
