grahamc
God tier: Mazda MX5 Mid tier: MR2 Bad tier: Anything that costs more than £50 to fix So Im in "god tier" and "bad tier", hmmmm honestly hard to beat the MX5 for fun vs cost. Missus has finally suggested that it may be a little slow, so supercharger is being considered God Tier http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/images/events/lemans2002/1930_bentley_blower.jpg Hooning around your local trackday in a priceless 'Blower' Bentley. Be impressed if it makes it a full lap.... I could never bring myself to take something like that out, but 240z will be going onto track once complete
j_jza80
I'd love it. I wouldn't own a car I wouldn't dare enjoy occasionally.
Claire Helen
So MX5 seems to be the car of choice for cheap and fun runs! Just power is an issue on the straights, so find bendy circuits lol! For those of you that have these second race/fun cars what do you do about insurance, do you just pay for the year or do you do classic insurance for 20+ year old cars or have a trailer etc? I take it none of you use your daily's lol!! I am not bothered about insurance for the track if I smash my car up lol, but need to be able to drive it to the track. grahamc
All my cars on a multi car policy, works out very reasonable when the GTR is included. I used to buy track day insurance but the cost was getting silly... No trailor, car is road friendly and regular services and MOTs is quite useful in keeping the car up to scratch since I dont DIY it.
Wez
Have used http://www.competition-car-insurance.co.uk/ in the past, lots of options available.
pedrosixfour
I trailer mine. That way if/when I leave half of it in a barrier I can still drag the rest of it home behind me and start again!
berg
Agree with Chris Wilson, RX-7 is an absolute animal on the track I went in a very mildly tuned/modified rx-7 round the nurburgring and i was quite astonished how it handled, it walked over most things there including the mad germans in their M3's, the GT3RS were a different story though, couldnt quite catch those boys Obviously the driver was not shy and has years and years of experience Not the cheapest car to begin with though these days

Just too expensive for my first track car, want something cheap to see if I enjoy it etc, that's why I'm not putting my supra out there! I'd cry if I so much as scratched it. This way I can give it my all and not be too worried
Claire Helen
I'm with Sky insurance at the moment so not sure how much they would charge extra for the Mazda on my Supras insurance, as think they do multi

Claire Helen
What about the old BMW's? 3 or 5 series, or any others. Seen some of them on track days?
pedrosixfour
The RX-7 FD had one of the best production chassis for track days ever, they are a work of art. Buy a spare engine or two though, and jerry cans in bulk, for the fuel How about one with an LS* V8 conversion Chris, would you rate one of those for track use, time attack etc.? j_jza80
Rotary engine is well suited to track work. It is general road use that kills them, cold starts, repeated hot starts, not warming them up and cooling down thoroughly etc. They have been used very successfully as race and time attack cars, including by Whifbitz. TheTurtleshead
MX5 - Mark 1!! If it's not already been said. Handles better and is lighter than the fatter Mark 2.
Rajinder
What about the old BMW's? 3 or 5 series, or any others. Seen some of them on track days? Expensive but very quick. Difficult to catch and keep up with.
Phlukey
I think 2 wheels is more fun than 4 on a track
j_jza80
And much more likely to get you seriously injured
Phlukey
Meh, very true, but I think the risk involved plays a big part in the rush it gives.
Hobgoblin
Not a fan of the MR2, driven a couple and don't do it for me generally. Maybe go for a car that isn't jap may be another option, although the MX5 has got allot of thumbs up! Have you driven an MR2 on track? It is a different experience cruising on the road, and going flat out on a track. With just a few basic modifications, the (Mk2) MR2 is a great track car. Scott
MK2 MR2 tubby or an MX-5. I'd probably choose the MX-5 if I could fit in one, I'd always end up back in the MR2 though, serious track weapons.

It is just right as it's pink http://i.imgur.com/m0ZHVGP.jpg That's lovely, not sure the pink is my cup of tea personally but does look great! What kind of money do them cars go for?
