Congratulations to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Around 5.00 PM today Queen Elizabeth will beat the record for the longest reigning British monarch in history.

My best wishes and thanks to her, she's been a wonderful monarch and has worked hard for Britain. Congratulations and thanks!

I had hoped she would have had a new Royal yacht by now, it was a bad decision to retire Britannia, surely the country

could see its way to building another, it was fantastic show piece for our royal family and world presence.

Congratulations and thanks. :)

We couldn't have wished for a better head of state.

I disagree about Britannia though, the Royals yachting around the world on a state funded Yacht would have been a hard pill to swallow for a country currently having to cut back to live within its means. :)

She has said that she will not abdicate, which is common practice. Should she reach a point where she is incapable of doing her job, she will still remain Queen, but Charles will become Prince Regent until she passes.

Besides which, I think she's still got a good few years of service left. :) Certainly if her mum was anything to go by!

Well naturally. with Nicola Sturgeon and Alex Salmond to fete, who would want to bother with the British monarchy.... :)

You've just managed to summarize in one sentence why a constitutional Monarch is superior to an elected career politician as head of state. I doubt many Phd's could do that! :D

This forum is definitely going downhill...

Think I must be one of the only ones that doesn't care about the queen or the royal family tbh!

You're not alone mate, I couldn't give a xxxx.

Time we got rid of the royalty, the lords, ladies dukes and duchesses from Scotland, give the land back the people and end the privilege of birthright.

She's Queen Elizabeth the first for us and her name being put to a new hospital in Glasgow which she has no connection to, either financially or historically, has caused controversy in the city with a large petition raised to rename the hospital for Glasgow and the Glaswegians.

Another one here that could not give a damn about our Monarchy. Lets be honest the BS that she does 'so much' for this country is rubbish. She is a puppet for our Government that has no say in the ruling of her so called own country. Yes she can object to those 'plebs' in Westminster, but it would fall on deaf ears.

As for the Economy blah blah yawn, we could have put Lily Savage in Buckingham Palace give him/her/it an official title of 'The Queen' and the tourists would still flock to see.

Here's an interesting thought.

Would you prefer an elected career politician, or someone who has been groomed from birth from the job? Looking around at other heads of state, I can't find any that compare to our Queen. She carries unparalleled respect and prestige around the world. Career politicians are hated even more than bankers.

Short termist, opportunistic career politicians who have never held a real job in their lives are the problem with our governance, not a family that dedicates itself to public service. And I for one am glad that we have a safety net that prevents coups and the government turning the armed forces on the civilian population.

No system of rule is perfect, but I believe ours is the best compromise. And they must be doing something right, as they are more popular than they have ever been.

And as for that "economy, blah, blah, etc", the royal family literally bring in hundreds of millions to the treasury every year. Hardly an insignificant amount.

I do agree with Westcoaster about the Lords though. Hereditary peerages are a relic of feudalism, and have no place in modern society. And I'd get rid of the Bishops too, they have no legitimacy there any more. Although I would be reluctant to endorse elected peers if it meant the Lords was turned into a mirror image of the commons. It's should be above party squabbling.

Kinda missed the point of 'puppet'. But as you have said she is a well respected and very much liked puppet, but so is Kermit and Miss Piggy.

Also no one is disputing the revenue, I certainly ain't, but I merely pointed out you could put any puppet in there and the tourists would still flock. Compared to other countries the old fart is good value at about 50ish pence per person.
