Can you still buy cars back from an insurer?

My wife drove my jaguar into the back of our mpv/van and in in a dilemma as to whether to claim on the insurance.

The van is a 98 Toyota which needs a new tailgate and is unlikely that Toyota will still supply them, so I guess it will get written off. The jag needs a new bumper which isn't a big deal.

I'd like to keep the van as the damage is only cosmetic, but I'm in a dilemma since the insurer will fight over the value and might not sell it back to me.

Do you think it's worth risking a claim?

Personally, no. Even if you can buy it back, it will be listed as cat D. That combined with the raised insurance premiums you will both have from now on.

Unless it's really bad I would sort it out yourself. I bet you could pick up cheap second hand parts and get it sorted yourself.
