JackyBoi
For the past 3 hours or so I've heard these distant but distinctive explosions which sound a bit like thunder or cars popping. But it's been going on for such a long time! The best way to describe it is this article from 2014; the sound in the video is exactly what I can hear now http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/542119/Mystery-explosions-Britain-unexplainable-loud-bangs
JackyBoi
Rubbish iPhone video but if you turn it up you can hear it https://vimeo.com/138475675
j_jza80
Apparently there is an Army training range in Thetford, I wonder if it could be that? From my totally novice point of view, I would guess that was either weapons fire or some kind or perhaps some sort of thunder/weather anomaly. It's louder now, stops for a bit very abruptly, then continues again: https://vimeo.com/138476800 Really irritating not knowing what it is! Abz
I'm sure one of tre current / ex forces members on here will confirm whether it's gunfire or not 1am at night though? I know these army folks like an early start but 1am
mc92
Spooky. It doesn't sound like thunder to me so I'd go with gunfire or fireworks too.
Phlukey
That deffo sounds like large caliber gun fire. I work shifts and the power station is right next to Lydd firing ranges. A few times I've seen them doing night exercises when I've been on a night shift and you can see the red tracer rounds from the heavy stuff going right out to sea. Sounds just like that, so I'd imagine that's what it is.
j_jza80
1am at night though? I know these army folks like an early start but 1am War isn't a 9-5 job Loads of the training they do will be at night, although I'm not sure how far that extends to live fire training. What, that is crazy, I thought after 5pm they stop firing and play football with the enemy
Al Massey
Yeah that's gun fire. SA80 5.56mm most likely, to slow for our higher caliber weapons as the GPMG is a fast machine gun. At that time it would be too late for ranges, so would be an exercise I reckon. Section attacks or defence. Oh I miss those days
Guest TheRedViper
Would also go with gunfire, defo an exercise though, doubt they'd be on the ranges at that time. Also it sounds like blanks which would make sense if it's an exercise.
cered
Is it weird that I find the distant sound of rounds popping off comforting? I look forward to bonfire night all year...

No, I love the sound. Makes me miss it though. Wasn't a comforting sound in Iraq or afghan but back home it's great.

When our replacements came, during the first night they panicked and hiding under cover while we just carried on playing cards lol
