Explosions in distance at night

For the past 3 hours or so I've heard these distant but distinctive explosions which sound a bit like thunder or cars popping. But it's been going on for such a long time! The best way to describe it is this article from 2014; the sound in the video is exactly what I can hear now

Apparently there is an Army training range in Thetford, I wonder if it could be that?

From my totally novice point of view, I would guess that was either weapons fire or some kind or perhaps some sort of thunder/weather anomaly.

It's louder now, stops for a bit very abruptly, then continues again:

Really irritating not knowing what it is!

That deffo sounds like large caliber gun fire. I work shifts and the power station is right next to Lydd firing ranges. A few times I've seen them doing night exercises when I've been on a night shift and you can see the red tracer rounds from the heavy stuff going right out to sea. Sounds just like that, so I'd imagine that's what it is.

Would also go with gunfire, defo an exercise though, doubt they'd be on the ranges at that time.

Also it sounds like blanks which would make sense if it's an exercise.

No, I love the sound.

Makes me miss it though.

Wasn't a comforting sound in Iraq or afghan but back home it's great.

Veteran friend of mine is the same, said he sleeps like a baby on bonfire night. Not a veteran myself but yeah can imagine IDF isn't pleasant... :search:

You get used to it after a while.

In Iraq we were IDF'd every 5 hours for 4 months.

When our replacements came, during the first night they panicked and hiding under cover while we just carried on playing cards lol

Yeah that's gun fire.

SA80 5.56mm most likely, to slow for our higher caliber weapons as the GPMG is a fast machine gun.

At that time it would be too late for ranges, so would be an exercise I reckon.

Section attacks or defence.

Oh I miss those days :)

Thanks for clearing that up :) it didn't stop until 2am!! That's about 5 hours approximately of continuous firing. Must have been a very thorough exercise

just tell them you were shot with small caliber bullets so you built up an immunity to bigger bullets and stopped worrying so much...
