Damage to tyre Sidewall, after a stupid mistake.

Sure I know the answer to this.

I have just had my car catch me out for the first time in five years :(

Clipped a curb and have now got a ding in the lip of the front wheel, (first curb mark I have put on the wheels, all the others were done by the previous owner of the wheels).

AND I now have a chunk carved into the side wall on both nearside tyres, Guessing these will need changing? I am right in thinking it illegal to have sidewall damage arnt I?

Thanks in advance,

A very dipressed Jake

Going to take it to a tyre place tomorrow, going to definitely need the balancing re-done and tracking I should have thought.

Depends on the depth of the damage iirc, bad luck Jake its bound to happen to us all at one point, atleast its just the tyre's and a little ding on the rim

Yeah tell me about it, Gutted. Going to be a costly mistake if I have to replace the tyres, which I would have thought I do. The front rim has a nasty scrape to as you can see.

More worried If anything else would be damaged, I was only at very light speed. from a stand still then the back end just kept going, tried to catch it but snaked for three twitchs then I ran out of road as it started to correct. :(

The outer rubber is mostly cosmetic. As long as you haven't exposed the cord to allow water I gress and thers no deformity it will prob be fine .

Nope no Cord is on show, so maybe I escaped it. Even though you say it will probably be fine, how would Mr Plod feel about it If he saw it. Is it actually legal? After It happened I brought it straight home and she is sat on the drive now, could even be bothered to put it in the garage I was the annoyed. Dont want to be giving them a reason to give me a fine or points.

It would depend if a copper saw it and deemed it dangerous. Looks like you have damaged the rim protector on the tyre and that is extra rubber in my book. I personally wouldn't expect that to be dangerous.

I drove my old Laguna like that for years after a bump with a kerb. I would keep an eye on it and see if it bulges or you see metal wires coming out through the rubber.

Tyre place will probably say replace it though.

Ive worked with tyres for 8 years and that looks safe. Double check the chunk behind the flappy bit and make sure there is no cord showing as its weakend the side wall. Aslong as there is no cord you will be ok. And if its safe then you just stick the flappy bit back with a bit of super glue

I work with tyres to and as been said its just the rim protection that's why it's extra rubber so things like this happen and don't mash wheels up! Like said check for cords and as for the flappy bits superglue works wonders lol and 100% safe as your just bonding the rubber back together :)

Brilliant, massive relief just the annoying damage to the lips themselves then. Needed an excuse to get the lips professionally done anyway :D

Thanks for everyones help. I will give them and the rest of the car a full going over tomorrow to check for any nasty things.

Even if the tyres were knackered, you've go to look on the brightside that it could of been a hell of a lot worse mate.

Definitely, certainly a eye opener again to show how easy it can happen. If I had been actually been putting my foot down properly I could have easily ended up in the barrier.

At least the damage is minimal.

Exactly.

I remember when I lost the arse end of mine coming off a roundabout- can happen so quickly.

The new LSD seems to working then mate. :D Glad its only a minor ding and not a harsh lesson. :)

Lol you could say that, weird as I know this was mainly driver error, but seemed strange to me as the other day on a spirited drive she just kept gripping wouldnt kick out. I really wasnt pushing her and it just went.
