Guest suprageek
Got a new harmonic balancer for my sup, it's very tight to get on, any tips to get it on without breaking something, thanks
dr_jekyll
Put the bolt in and drive the b4stwerd home. Just make sure its on the snout in the rite place with the keyway lined up
Guest suprageek
Had a go that way the balancer is turning ffs
Scooter
Then you must be missing the small metal piece that sits in the crank nose. There should be a square sectioned raised section on the crank nose that aligns with the notch in the balancer.
Guest suprageek
No it's there, the woodruff key
mellonman
As scooter says you must be missing the woodruff key, you can get them from a motor bike spares shop for about £1 but you would nned the orignal to compair so makes that a moot point, Is it a stock balancer as I have heard after market ones need opening up to even get on
dr_jekyll
Do you mean you are turning the engine over before it pushes back
Guest suprageek
Yes it's turning the engine before it's fully on, its almost there
Dnk
I'd be concerned about driving it on if its too tight, it could pick up on the crank and cause a proper mess. Is it a genuine Toyota CP ?
Guest suprageek
No it's an aftermarket one dnk
dr_jekyll
Impact gun would sort it. But you going to need to lock the engine if not. In farness puting it in gear with the handbreak well on should stop it enough for you to wind it back . there will be a bit of slack to take up but should do the job
Scott
Aftermarket ones are meant to be honed to size. The crank end gets accurately measured and the bore of the new pulley get's honed out to match. It says in the instructions that it's undersize to cover all cranks. Guest suprageek
I think it's on, gonna compare the original on how far it sits out from the lower timing cover to be sure it's all the way on, looks about right it's only sitting 3-4 mm out
Scooter
Ah I assumed you had a pulley locking tool, without one, or at least some sort of in gear handbrake etc locking as mentioned above you can't really torque it up high enough, can you? Lee P
As already said you are supposed to measure then hone them to fit

Guest suprageek
No it hasn't I put it on and took it off a few times till it just slid in nicely
Scott
No it hasn't I put it on and took it off a few times till it just slid in nicely For that to happen, metal would need to have came off of something.
dr_jekyll
Itle be fine just drive and enjoy.
Chris Wilson
It's supposed to be an interference fit, and need pulling on (by the bolt) and pulling off (with a puller). It's now goosed...and merely relying on clamping by the bolt to hold it on, and driven and damping via small contact areas. Expect it to come loose. Guest suprageek
It's not goosed it does need putting on with the bolt and pulling off with a puller, it's on tight it's going nowhere, when I said it slid on and off easily I didn't mean by hand Edited September 7, 2015 by suprageek (see edit history)
Chris Wilson
Oh, I was just going by your post where you said you kept taking it on and off "till it slid in nicely". It's not supposed to slide in nicely, it's supposed to be pulled on as a tight interference fit by the damper bolt. But if you are happy, I am
Guest suprageek
Thanks Chris, yes comes off with the puller and screws back in with the bolt feels just right
