SZ MOT emissions failure

(with reference to recent MOT emissions thread)

Okay, just had my decatted 95 SZ MOTed at my local Toyota garage, I proffered the 'engine code no-cat' test argument, but it failed on "emissions" and "sound level". Their argument was all cars post-94 have to have cats fitted, so they gave it a cat equipped test (he actually said they put it thru as a Toyota Supra 3 litre). So where do I stand, is it worth arguing my point, or is he correct? Mark? Any other MOT testers here??

Also I never realised you could fail on sound levels - guess I never stood a chance on that one! :music:

I need a quick response, since it needs to be retested on Wednesday, so I'm gonna have to decide today whether just to have a cat stuck back in for the retest. Any advice gratefully received.

Just picked up my emission test printout:-

Engine oil temp = 67C (>60)

Fast Idle Test

Engine speed = 2599rpm (2350-2650)

CO Level = 0.65% (>0.30) FAIL!

HC Level = 41ppm (>200)

Lambda = 1.01 (0.97-1.03)

Natural Idle Test

Engine speed = 733rpm (550-750)

CO Level = 0.44% (>0.50) PASS!

Interesting that it passed on CO emissions as idle - why is the pass threshold higher at idle than at speed, if emissions are lower (at least in my case)?

Another interesting thing, on the brake diagnosis sheet:

Total weight unladen = 1397kg!

Just goes to show how lardy those UK specs are with their heavy turbos! :p

Oh and as I said it failed 6.3 "Exhaust system" due to "Excessive noise exhaust" - is this a judgement call or are there specific dB regulations? Anyone?

Still hoping for some quick advice, or I'm just gonna have to swallow my pride and have the rear cat stuck back in. :(

The noise thing is subjective (spelt?) not many ppl i know fail cars on noise unless it is REALLY loud ! The mot does allow for the mot testers interpretation of the guide lines laid out in the mot manual and as such you will find differences from place to place, there shouldn't be but ...

Sounds like the best bet is to stick a cat in it will be a lot less hassle in the long run, sorry it didn't get through might have been worth a run up to me I'd have given you bonus points for the sound :)

LOL, think it might be coming to you next year Mark! :D

Okay, gonna get the rear cat put in for a day then - that should solve the emissions, just hope he isn't gonna be a complete barsteward about the sound, since I imagine it'll still be pretty loud.

To answer your question Bobbeh, I'm not exactly sure what exhaust it is - it just has a small metal plate on the underside that says "Bullet exhausts" - guess it's some small Japanese outfit. Was planning to replace it soon anyway, with something a little less deafening / dented / tarnished. May be it's last outing at Pod on Sunday.

I was wondering what the difference would be if they are full catback systems, but TT and NA exhausts are always listed separately by companies - why is this then? Is it just because certain designs are better suited to one rather than the other??

Understandable, but do you think it would be the same from the rear cat back? Since most systems don't replace anything that far forward due to emission regulations in other countries, that wouldn't explain why systems are listed separately. I only recall seeing Apexi and Greddy products advertised for NAs.
