Alex_GT
Hi guys, I'm looking at a car that has done just over 60,000 miles. As I understand it there is a major service at 60,000, so I'm going to assume this has not been done. Does anyone have any in depth breakdown of what work needs doing? Chris Wilson
Don't worry about the service, on 20 year old Supras you need to be looking at things like needing new turbos, new radiator, new heater matrix, suspension arms, crank and suspension dampers, brake calipers seized, blah blah. The stuff that can add up to a good few grand. A cam belt, fluids, filters and plug changes and check over are trivial in comparison. Don't assume a clean on top example is not a rot box underneath, either!

Chris Wilson
Best to tell potential new owners how it is Buying these things is easy, but fettling and maintaining them can catch people unaware and ruin the experience if the car needs substantial work. Wise words! I maintain my Supra pretty well, yet still facing a 2.5k bill.

Or should I just walk away completely?
Swampy442
No, he's saying that servicing is fine but theres lots of other parts you might have to replace that are a lot more critical/expensive.
Chris Wilson
I am just saying I see a lot of newly acquired Supras land here with their owners wanting a service and fluid change, but once I look over it I see it really needs a total rebuild Theses are now old cars, but parts are still new car prices, and many need a lot of them. Naturally they all need regular servicing, although oil and filter changes are the main items to ensure best longevity. I was just forewarning you that there may be other, far greater costs to consider when buying one.

Hitbox Junkie
They burn a hole in your pocket regardless. Everyone just doesn't want you to get landed with a big bee sting if it needs major parts replaced. Go ahead with service as it helps logevity of the engine ect but check the car over for all other major parts. These after all are 20+years old dont let the young lines fole you from a distance. Work for women too
Guest Budz86
I think what Chris is trying to say is it's all well and good following the Toyota service schedule but there are other things that happen with these cars (same as most 'old' cars) that need attention just as much. For example, oil, filter and full fluid change might set you back 200 -300 quid and cam belt about the same again; not major money when talking about these cars. But if you need new suspension arms they are 200-300 each and you have uppers and lowers on each corner. Parts and labour will add up to a fair bit if they need changing and some of them are now discontinued so getting harder to find! Clutches and flywheels now seem to be adding up to a lot too for OEM items. Heater matrix is a nightmare of a job because of the work involved (not hard, just long!). Smoky engines can also be expensive to sort if it's something like turbo seals or valve stem seals; parts are cheap but labour may not be! The above isn't there to put you off, just put you in the picture If you have a look in the new members section there are guides on what to check when buying a car. There is also a stupid amount of knowledge on this forum so feel free to ask or put a link to the car you're thinking about buying
Nic
There should be a break down of the service schedules in the repair manual here http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/content.php?51-Repair-Manuals
