kitch79
Surely displays should never be above main roads!! 7 dead apparently.

Havard
Tragic..!! If there are only 7 fatalities, it will be a miracle. It looked as if there was a traffic jam on the A27 and the plane has come down in the middle of it. H.

I thought it hit head on, but looking now it seems it hit almost horizontal.

Dnk
There is footage showing it all the way to the impact and there's no sign of the pilot ejecting or attempting to eject

Getting out or driving off isn't really an option. H.

Chris Wilson
Tragic, but I jhope we are not seeing the start of a typical health and safety knee jerk reaction, resulting in air shows being banned. Society seems to think *EVERYTHING* can be made 100% safe if you throw enough legislation at it. At this rate we'll be having cars preceeded by men with red flags soon. Accidents happen, powered motoring and aviation events would not attract the huge crowds and TV coverage if they were 100% safe. Although sitting in a car in a traffic jam, in a train etcetera, does not usually give you the willies that you may be about to be landed on by an out of control jet plane, nor do you expect to have a wheel come off, or suffer a tree fall, landslide or other event. How many die each week on the roads that go unnoticed? Only the drama of the incident brings it sadly to the media's attention. I would be more concerned about terrorists than air shows, in the grand scale of things. We live under the flight area of two local airfields and every weekend I see planes performing aerobatics overhead, but I see no reason to see them banned. A plane doing a few hundred MPH will reach populated areas within seconds, even if their aerobatics are over deserted regions, to say they shouldn't be near main roads is impractical. There are main roads all over the place! Nonetheless a terrible weekend for many directly and indirectly involved. On the positive side the braver elements of humanity seemed to have staved off another potential tragedy on a train in France.
Dnk
No doubt questions will need to be asked, my first one is why was it not over empty fields doing its loops ?

It would seem to be quite rural but at those speeds there are bound to be roads nearby which ever direction it goes. Seems like the pilot thought he could rescue it but ultimately failed. H. It almost seems like it was flying along the A27, if you look on a map where it was just doesn't add up as to why it would be there, seems to be acres of space all around and only 500 metres to the sea

I understand what you are saying, but at the same time, people who weren't involved in any such way with that show were killed, doing their daily business due to a airshow. Maybe they should be banned, I read that this was the 7th crash in 6 years in the UK from airshows or viseversa that's just not fair. And yes we have planes flying over us everywhere and anything can happen, but they are not doing stunts. I feel really strong about this...an airplane crash just fills me with fear. Having nearly been in one myself. TERRIFYING stuff.

I had a look at google maps at the bigger picture and to hit a main road, compared to the amount of greenery around, is quite a feat. Then again, it was an "accident" so we are not sure how much control the pilot actually had. I would like to know how many air shows take place without incident or fatalities. 7 in 6 years sounds bad, but if there is one every weekend across the country then it really isn't. I think there is an element of risk with any kind of motor type event, whether it be planes, cars, tractors etc. There are far more dangerous things happening every day that would cause a greater loss of life. Who is sorting out people with poor eyesight driving or elderly motorists who have no idea what they are doing etc? Drink drivers would be a good one too. We can't wrap everyone in cotton wool. Probably because lots would die of heat exhaustion on a hot day, but you get my point. H.

Im one of those who would probably go to a car show/race and stand way back in fear of a tyre taking my head of. I love airplanes and always have, but having one fall on you whilst in your car because of a show....I just don't know what to make of it all really :/

And they were all fatal don't matter if it were the pilot/crew or people on the ground, people died. I remember 1 or 2 recent ones. don't think they were show related though. And yeah the pilot not being vapourized is just mad. Good stuff hes ok

I love airplanes and always have, but having one fall on you whilst in your car because of a show....I just don't know what to make of it all really :/ Don't try to make anything of it, it was one of those things, wrong place, wrong time. Very sad, very dramatic, but one of thousands of fatal accidents that happen all the time, every week, all over the world. Without pushing the boundaries mankind would be very boring, the "authorities" have been pushed to ban professional boxing, (on an amateur level they seem to have done this already, in schools), rugby, even cricket. How many innocents die in train crashes? As a possible result of someone mapping a high powered car on the road? Watching motorsport? Directly, indirectly, by consent, by fate, things happen. To try and stop all "things" happening would be to live the life of a Ming vase. Deemed precious, but utterly inert. It'll be forgotten in a month or two, a fatality 2 weeks ago, just up the road at Oulton Park, where a jet crashed in woodland a few hundred yards from a busy main road is not even remembered here and mentioned. In that case only the pilot died or was hurt, it's the luck of the draw. Could have made yesterday's accident look minor had it come down in the crowd, or on Little Budworth village, just yards away. These shows make vast amounts of money for local economies, throughout the summer, accidents are rare, but tend to be dramatic!
