berg
Have a manual conversion to go on my car so looking for opinions on competition clutches I always had a spec stage 3 6 puk in my old na-t but i never really loved it in traffic, useable but not that great due to the 6 puk design Ultimately the stage 3+ is the king with higher torque rating and easy for street due to having a full face design but it has a hefty price difference Does anyone have any experience with Competition clutch stage 2? Seems to be rated 80% more torque than stock so should handle BPU fine? The car is only a weekend toy but id like to stick to full face clutch if possible
martincoupe
how much power are you looking at ? and its not normally the clutch that goes its the boxes as w58 are good for 400 but any more and you have a timebomb !
berg
Its for bpu which will be around 380 I know all about the w58 and the said maximum power, im asking about the clutch, a stock clutch will not handle any more power than designed for in an na especially a bpu tt lump. Thats proven Just after opinions on people using or have used a competition clutch
Chris Wilson
You want a clutch that is only JUST capable of handling the torque, and with a none aggressive take up. If you go for something wild it won't slip on take up and put shock loads through the unsuitably rated gearbox, which is MUCH MUCH more likely to cry enough. And you must understand clutches and gearboxes are rated by torque handling, any company that advertises them by BHP is just showing they are clueless and their products probably suspect. robby a
Ive just fitted a stage 4 competition clutch and lightened flywheel in my w58. It was recommended by a few traders on here because I'm running bpu. I wanted something that was going to last and not feel to heavy and aggressive. I've only done 100 miles and it seems fine
martincoupe
would recommend XTD Clutch kit they are around £300 with choice of sprung or unsprung clutches pressure plates flywheels etc
Chris Wilson
The ideal clutch would be one like the Yanks use for drag racing with centrifugal bob weights to increase clamping pressure with increased engine RPM. Gentle engagement, but the ability to handle high torque without an insane clamping pressure initially. Whether they make a kit, or whether you would have to adapt or make a flywheel I have no idea. They are usually coil spring units, rather than diaphragm clamped ones, from what I remember. I have to say using a W58 is madness, it is just not a suitable transmission and is just a ticking bomb. But a wise clutch choice would add significantly to probable transmission longevity, as would sympathetic driving practices. I had a customer drive off from herre in an NA / T witha W58, doing a drag race set off to presumably impress the old lady opposite who was tending her roses. I said to myself, that'll last a month. I was wrong, it lasted ten days before stripping gears.
berg
I understand the box is a limiting factor but i dont race my car about or anything like that My old na-t had 411hp and 390 torque and lasted the year and a half i had it and is still going strong now after a further 2 years na-t, i know some die early on but the clutch and the driver i think will play a major roll But yes its the torque the problem thats why i thought about stage 2 competition clutch which is rated 80% more torque than stock It should handle the torque and be kind to the box, for however long that may be The ideal clutch would be one like the Yanks use for drag racing with centrifugal bob weights to increase clamping pressure with increased engine RPM. Thanks Chris i shall have a browse and see if i can find anything Edited August 17, 2015 by berg (see edit history)
