Ewen
This question seems to have a lot of interviewees stumped...Amazingly, most people get it wrong - is it really that difficult ? A bat and ball, together cost £1.20. If the bat costs £1 more than the ball, how much is the bat ?

Dash Rendar
The good old fashioned GCSE method, for anybody that cares... Let bat = x Let ball = y x + y = 1.2 // Because bat plus ball is £1.20 y + 1 = x // Because bat costs £1 more than ball Substituting x for (y+1)... 2y + 1 = 1.2 Therefore, 2y = 0.2 So y = 0.1 // Ball is 10p Substituting back in... x = 0.1 + 1 // Bat is £1.10 I can't believe I bothered to post this! I need to get out more. Still, I'm a big believer in methodology, cause it helps when the numbers get more complicated... Which is probably why I'm now a programmer and can talk to computers better than people. I'll go and get my coat...

imi
Keep it Simple. ball = x bat = x + 1 x + (x +1) = 1.2 2x = 0.2 x = 0.1 Piece of piss...... lucky strike.
SUPRALOOPY
i thought ball would 20p bat+ ball 120 bat £1 more than ball. ball 20p feck thats why i work on cars
Dash Rendar
Keep it Simple. ball = x bat = x + 1 x + (x +1) = 1.2 2x = 0.2 x = 0.1 Didn't I say that? Apologies for being too verbose!!
imi
Didn't I say that? Apologies for being too verbose!! Sorry mate...you used too many words. In school, I used to work out the solution with the minimalistic explaination, teachers used to ask me why, and I'd go, well, youre the smart one - work it out.... Jurgen-Jm-Imports
i thought ball would 20p bat+ ball 120 bat £1 more than ball. ball 20p : am with you
Scoboblio
I just thought Bat = at least a pound, leaving 20p total, which is then split between the bat and the ball to make it an even £1 between them = Bat £1.10 ball 10p
RedM
I'd have just nicked the bat and ball.
