Interview question....

The good old fashioned GCSE method, for anybody that cares...

Let bat = x

Let ball = y

x + y = 1.2 // Because bat plus ball is £1.20

y + 1 = x // Because bat costs £1 more than ball

Substituting x for (y+1)...

2y + 1 = 1.2

Therefore, 2y = 0.2

So y = 0.1 // Ball is 10p

Substituting back in...

x = 0.1 + 1 // Bat is £1.10

I can't believe I bothered to post this! I need to get out more.

Still, I'm a big believer in methodology, cause it helps when the numbers get more complicated... Which is probably why I'm now a programmer and can talk to computers better than people. :blink:

I'll go and get my coat...

Didn't I say that? Apologies for being too verbose!!

Sorry mate...you used too many words.

In school, I used to work out the solution with the minimalistic explaination, teachers used to ask me why, and I'd go, well, youre the smart one - work it out.... :)

Exactly, its Arithmetic not a dissertation...plus I didnt really like my teachers too. :) apart from our honry religious studies teacher who used to wear see through clothes and boy was she flirty.

Standing in front of the class as punishment was so satisfying (if you know what I mean) ;)
