Hitbox Junkie
So I know theirs a few of you that ride bikes. Im looking at taking my CBT and full bike licence this year or beginning of next as the car will be done . After this I am going to be looking at a YAMAHA R1 (1999-2002) What are your opinions on this? Also before I buy that particular bike what would be a good starting bike? MRX
When I passed my test my first 'big bike' was a Thundercat, a 600 sports bike that's a tamer version of the R6, and that was great to start off on. You'll get varied opinions on, some will say jump on a R1 but just go steady, and some will say get something small to start with. In my opinion a tame 600 was a good move for me and then gradually move up as your skills and confidence increase. I saw an R1 down at Bournemouth footy stadium on Saturday and I have to say it looked amazing. I think my next big bike will be a GSXR 1000, always wanted one of them.... robtup
cbr 600rr are brilliant bikes very easy to ride hade mine on road and track as a experienced rider I have never took it to its limit. start on a 6 if you don't have much experience that's just my opinion at the end of the day they only go as fast as you make them go
listy
I don't have a bike (yet) but a lot of people I know have had 1000's and most have said on the road you can't really use the power, and that a 600on twisties is much more fun. Personally I'd never get a bike bigger than a 600 for a sports bike. I've been looking at Harleys lately, which are not as expensive as I thought they would be. MATT RR
When I got my first bike I took the advice of "go stright for big power or you will just end up getting bored wanting more from your bike", so I did that and for my first bike got a Aprillia RSV Mille, loved it but then went for a Yamaha R1 which was my favourite out of the 2! I had a lot of fun with them, and would never consider getting anything with less power but thats just personal choice, the R1 did everything I wanted and more heres a pic just before I flogged it, I'd love Harley next but the Mrs would kill me.. Hitbox Junkie
I just love the styling of the R1. but having looked at the CBR's they look nice in blue or black
sidewaysdan
If you like the r1 styling then I would recommend the tamer r6 for you first bike. This is my old one and I had it stage 2 jetted and a few other bits it was still quick and very nice to ride.
tony tt
In all seriousness mate an older R1 for a first bike will probably murder you if your not careful. That being said it isn't an issue jumping straight on a bike bike as long as you remember the throttle goes both ways. You really need to be switched on for a litre bike or any big bike as the brain needs adjusted to just how quick you are moving. My first bike was a K4 Gixer 750 after passing my test I sat and looked at it in the garage for 45mins thinking I'm going to die haha! Best thing you will ever do mate it's an awesome world to be in on a bike just take your time and enjoy it. It's the best thing I ever did going for my bike test. I've always had Suzuki 750's K4 K7 K9 and then got a K5 1000. What a machine the grunt a litre sports bike has is down right bonkers bud. 150mph and your still in 3rd gear!!! First bike a litre bike hmmm I'd be wary mate as it's very very addictive to ride fast. The 600 will have you looking for more after 3 or 4 months though that's why I went middle of the road with the 750 G-sxr. All the best oth it mate I'll be back on two wheels shortly myself . Good luck.
trebor69
I've been riding bikes for 34 years and had my full licence since 89, I've pretty much ridden all cc's too and believe me a decent 600 ridden properly has the potential kick the arse of pretty much anything on the road. If you want to go fast in straight lines then go for big cc but for all around handling and cornering then you'll find a 600 will slow down much quicker for corners and being lighter can be thrown around and will change direction a lot quicker. My ZRX1100 was very comfortable but it was a fight to get it where I wanted (at high speed) and pretty much impossible (on A roads) to use all of it's power. The 750 jap sports bikes are as big as you need if you are a bit heavier but as I'm getting older now I've gone for comfort too, I now have a 650 bandit and can ring the hell out of it and chuck it where I want to and it's great fun and doesn't give my back grief like my 7r's. This is all just MY opinion you understand
Swampy442
If you're looking for a litre sports bike, don't discount the ZX10, a good mate of mine has 3 I think, maybe 4. Rapid bikes, good looking and pretty affordable. Personally for your first big bike Id look at Fireblades.
skippyboyo1
Forget the old r1, get a k1 or 2 gsxr1000. The old r1 is lazy compared to the gsxr. My first bike was an ap50 followed bay a gsxr1000, its a big jump. To fill the gap I'd have a 2004 r6 - - - Updated - - - If you're looking for a litre sports bike, don't discount the ZX10, a good mate of mine has 3 I think, maybe 4. skippyboyo1
Just for reference a k1 gsxr1000 does 111mph in first.
Mk4Gaz
I passed my das about 12 or 13 years ago. Had a gsxr 400 Telefonica rep as my first bike, then bought a gsxr 600 brand new as a birthday present for myself. Being honest, if I were to buy another bike, it would be a 750. I loved the 600, but found you really have to ring their necks, to get the most out of them. The extra torque on the bigger bike, makes a smoother ride. I personally wouldn't go for a 1000 until you're used to riding, as they can be a bit wheelie happy, and its pretty scary when you're not expecting it!!! Graham1984
Do you guys not think the R1's look a bit 'boss eyed'.... My mate had a R6 which I'd recommend as a first bike. He's now just picked up a Honda CBR Fireblade which goes like stink.
