Guest she1by1
Hello, this is my first thread with a cry for help so please bear with me  The revs in my supra started to drop and fluctuate whilst maintaining a constant speed, video here  The car then stalled at a junction but I managed to get her started and limp her home. When I have turned the car on again to try and diagnose the problem, big clouds of black smoke come out of the exhaust. I have been looking through a few threads and thought it may have been the Idle control valve. However, this has been cleaned, put back on, still not worked, new one put on, still not worked. Myself and my boyfriend are completely lost on what the problem could be, and the car has now been off the road for 2 weeks now. Any help/ideas would be much appreciated x
David P
Is it T.T. or N/A?
Guest she1by1
Sorry forgot to mention it's a N/A
David P
The jittery rev counter could signify a dicky crank position sensor. Try swapping in another distributor, another thing to check would be the igniter earth.
Style
I just had a similar problem. Turns out it was the distributor leads to cylinders 5 and 6. They were knackered and were arcing out on the block before reaching the cylinder and igniting the petrol/air mixture. Black smoke everywhere as unburnt petrol was just pissing through the block. Luckily got it sorted before any major damage was done to the cylinders. So another vote for David P's method to fix, replace your distributor and leads. That should hopefully fix the problem
wile e coyote
yep as above when were all the plugs changed as people don't bother with 4 and 5 due to having to remove the throttle boddy
Guest she1by1
All 6 were changed in the summer last year, manifold and throttle body all off thanks for your help so far guys, new leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm are now on order. Will see if that works then will try the crank sensor, can't seem to find anywhere to get hold of one apart from Australia?!?!
David P
Check that the igniter is secured, the earth is through the fixings. The crank sensor is in the distributor and it's simple enough to swap in a second hand distributor to find out.
