This is, sadly, inevitable. A large number of Germans are against mass immigration (I'm not suggesting a majority, as the polls say otherwise), and the German government has adopted a similar stance to our last Labour one, where basically you're either for it or you're a racist. Governments should not have the power to just take in millions of people from abroad without asking the permission of the electorate.

Anarchy is peeping over the wall.... ;) Enoch prophesied it, and it's a comin'. We can't house them, we can't school them,

we can barely cope with our elderly population's medical needs, let alone with whatever gifts from afar they bring to our hospital doors,

but they keep arriving. Many of us don't want them. That spells potential trouble. The government is too weak to grasp the nettle, too

hamstrung by Europe, too frightened of the enemies already within. At such times the potential for general unrest is at its height.

(Might change my user name, I like "General Unrest"..... ;))

Thats what you guys want? really?

The daily mail of all people posting up how awful it is. Yet this had been in over in France and it was our army doing it they would be loving it.

I suspect no one wants this, but it is the migrants doing, not the poor Macedonians.

I don't want millions of economic migrants pouring in to the EU annually. And that is exactly what they are, they cease being refugees once they pass through a perfectly safe country without claiming asylum. We already have too high a population density compared to other major developed nations, with the resulting impacts on national infrastructure, public services, jobs etc.

These economic migrants are also doing long term damage to their own nations by leaving.

If the mother and son in your example are so desperate, why haven't they claimed asylum in Greece, Italy or France? They must have traveled through all of those countries to get to Calais.

This is exactly what I have been saying and once you then agree it isn't asylum related you have to ponder why they are so desperate to get here..........

Well, they won't be wanting to stop in Macedonia, will they? And as above, they don't seem to find all the other countries they pass through to their seemingly particular taste? I wonder why? Some places make it clear they ain't wanted by direct action. Others by making it economically less desirable than the place next door, so they ride on, often by state subsidised transport to get them the hell out of there. Good ol' Blighty is the flavour of the decade, that's where the money is! So how many do you reckon we should take? As a one off? Every year?

I reckon about 1% are genuine refugees, the rest chancers. There are enough chancers here as it is, we don't want any more.

Sweden and Germany are more popular with the migrants, though from what I have read many of them find that they don't like like those countries once there. Of course, under EU law they are free to then move wherever they like once they have been resident of an EU state. It would be interesting to find some statistical data on the birth country of EU migrants to the UK.

The main draw of the UK is our language. France is finding the same, to a lesser extent. Both a result of Britain and Frances Imperial past. Of course, the way that English has been adopted as the world language, thanks in no small part to the US, Hollywood and the internet also contributes.

I think that may be being a little harsh, they have nothing other than what they can carry, there are whole families not 'just' young men and it must take very bad conditions to leave everything behind and hit the road with a young family. It's not like you can compare these people to the guy on incapacity benefit whilst refereeing at the weekends is it? If someone puts a cat in a sack and throws it in the canal everyone will want their head on a stick, if a person wants to get across a border the same people would be happy to have them beaten back with a stick!? No easy answers but a definite lack of compassion in this thread.....yes I know I'm soft.

I have plenty of compassion for them, it is a basic human instinct to want to better your lot in life. But letting them all in to Europe is not the answer. Send our troops over there, create safe zones for them, train them to fend for themselves and to protect themselves. Provide them with the materials they need to do so. That would really be helping them, letting them in is just cursing their countries (and ours) to extremism.

Send our troops where? Think we've already tried that...
