Professional tyre fitters? my arse!

I took my work van into get new tyres at a well known tyre place on Thursday 40 min later after my company authorised them and the tyre fitter done his work I was on my way home. All seemed fine until I was out and about yesterday I knew something didn't feel right. I pulled over to have a look at my wheels they looked fine but I'm never easily satisfied. I got my wheel brace out to check the tightness of he bolts. All fine on the off side but he near side must only have been hand tight. I no resistance/stiffness in either direction. F@#king muppets could have killed me.

One of the girls I work with had the same. She came into work saying her car was knocking and steering was shaking. She had new tyres the day previous. Went to check and three were hand tight on one wheel, the other two nuts completely cross threaded, and another cross threaded on the other side.

They were bad and her three year old car had to have brand new wheel studs. Luckily the garage accepted full liability and paid the bill. If it wasn't for the cross threaded ones the wheel would have come off for sure as she had driven an hours journey in it!

That is terrible have you let said company know, as that is gross negligence if you had crashed because of it....

But good thing nothing bad did happen and you are ok.

Yeah cheers. I called to let them know, but they sounded sooo disinterested. "We double check all customers wheels before they leave" was the reply. I'm sure this is drilled into them to say this. I've been to other tyre centres where a second fitter goes around double checking but I did not have eyes on my van this time whilst it was being worked on but obviously it didn't happen this time or my wheels would have been fine.

I work in the tyre fitting trade, I have heard many similar stories, it happens so easily. Tyre fitters need no formal training, or qualifications, to go to work. The public is really at the mercy of them, and those who train, and supervise them.

We have installed a system whereby the fitter signs the jobsheet, to say he has torqued the nuts, they are then checked by another fitter, and again signed.

It puts around 2 minutes on the job, well worth it.

I had the opposite on my old Mondeo - the tyre fitting place did the wheel nuts up so tight I had to use the 5 foot long box section of an engine crane over the wheel brace as a lever to undo them, and even that took some serious effort  Fat chance of changing the wheels at the side of the road, idiots. They were probably north of 200ft/lbs!
