herbiemercman
Hi guys, I see a few cars on here with a beam / brace fitted from the nearside top damper mount to the offside damper mount, at a guess this is to strengthen the shell / bodywork.? Just cannot see why the stock cars do not have this.? Is it a bhp maxed out thing where the huge torque can distort the bodyshell.?
Tyson
I take it you mean a strut brace ? Accessibility and cost is my guess.
j_jza80
No Supras come from the factory with them, but 2JZ-GTE equipped Toyota Aristos Do. As above, the common term for them is a Strut Brace. For comparison Stock Supra engine bay Stock Aristo engine bay
Chris88
I guess that Toyota considered the Supra chassis stiff enough without an additional brace but not so the heavier Aristo.
Dnk
They don't do a fat lot and mostly cosmetic
Bizzyfingers
It keeps suspension geometry in line. You will be amazed how much chassis flex you will get under heavy cornering.
j_jza80
You would be surprised how little most of the aftermarket strutbraces increase rigidity.
Swampy442
I guess that Toyota considered the Supra chassis stiff enough without an additional brace but not so the heavier Aristo. Pretty much the same weight, but the Aristo has more doors so more flex.
j_jza80
Isn't the Supra just over 1600kg, and the Aristo around 1800?
cornimac
this is so unfair enjoy my loved ones ;-)
Swampy442
Isn't the Supra just over 1600kg, and the Aristo around 1800? Nope. Last Aristo I weighed was 1640. That was a Mk1 though
j_jza80
According to the link below, J-spec Supras are 1500-1550kg, so still quite a difference. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?325044-Why-do-some-supras-have-a-beam-across-the-top-of-the-engine&p=4057525#post4057525 The difference is not surprising, Toyota went to a great deal of weight saving with the MK4 Supra. Chris Wilson
They look shiny, but make some aspects of engine access harder. 99% of them have no functional benefit to body shell rigidity whatsoever.
