Private Plates???

Hi all,

So me and the wife fancy a bash at this drifting malarky.

We are looking at a BMW that a guy is selling with a private plate.

We have had the plate valued at £800 so we would sell it if we got the car.

My question is, should the car come with any documentation for the plate so that we can sell it once registered in our name?

If he doesnt have it, can it still be sold an the original reg put back on?

I did a google search but couldnt find the answers to my question..

Narh you just get the regular paper work like any other car. Or I did when I bought a car with "N3 JEM" on it.

Back then I just went into DVLA office and filled In retention application. Right in front of me they changed my tax disc to the original plate, issued me with some document so I could get plates made, they took my v5 doc and I received a new one a couple of weeks later.

And that was it. (£80-£100)

Now you have to go to the post office and get the paper work I think and post it. So takes longer.

That is if you want to change the plate off the car so they give you the original plate but not for selling it.

When I bought my private plate I got a document confirming that I am the new owner of the plate. I am sure I need this document to sell the private plate.

Yeah you'll of got this, or if bought from DVLA a V750 for its first ever owner... This is one of mine

You get the retention cert (which you can sell by changing the nominee) by completion the first pic i posted, by retaining the Reg.

So when i buy this new car, should i have some sort of documentation for the number plate? Or would i just get that along with the V5 when it arrives back with me?

Nope, just the V5, but you won't be able to 'retain' the plate until the V5 is in your name or at least until the DVLA records are updated to say the car belongs to you.

Once it is, you can fill out a form (first pic) to retain the reg, then they issue you with a new reg number for the car and the retention certificate. (My second pic - K17CHN - KITCHEN) Which you can then sell at your will.
