Bizzyfingers
OK guys, I've had this car for a few weeks now, after getting my brakes, suspension and rattles in the dash sorted out I took it out last night for a roll around. I've come to a conclusion thought, it's hideously slow! My 320d touring would not only trounce it but pull it over the finish line in a race to help it out. Is this generally the case with NA autos? I'm going to have a look at the rotor arm and dizzy later (had many vauxhalls with similar issue). Is there anything else I can look at to check. The car has been recently serviced, new plugs, belts, second hand box fitted (all of this by previous owner so not sure what it was like previously). Bizzyfingers
The car will eventually go Turbo + Manual but I'd like to ensure the condition of the engine first, if there is any issues I'd really like to iron them out now. Cheers guys.
rider
Go stick it on a rolling road. One mans slow is another mans fast but bhp doesn't lie. That'll tell you all you need to know about the engine and ancillaries condition.
walkerstrider
It should still pull quite well, never had a 320d trounce me. VXR's on the other hand...... Lol
Bizzyfingers
I thought it may have been the binding brakes but can't be now. I'll see if I can get her on a rolling road. I'd be surprised if it's putting out 160bhp
Bizzyfingers
I might get the timing checked too.
walkerstrider
Should be running around 190 - 200 hp
trebor69
Compression test?
Havard
Got a feeling the engine is going to need a compression test. Seem to remember my old NA coming out at about 185 per cylinder. On a dyno it only came out at about 175 Bhp iirc. They are not quick cars in comparison to most now. You have to remember the age of these cars. A lot of cars now push 180 - 200 Bhp without even trying. H. Edited July 19, 2015 by Havard (see edit history)

Graham1984
NA auto feeling slow isn't breaking news Check for binding calipers by touching the wheels and checking for heat. Look for white on your HT leads, check your dizzy cap and rotor arm, is it misfiring, any blows on the exhaust system etc. Good luck. Bizzyfingers
Fixed the binding brakes so it's not that, I'll check ignition and compression
Scooter
There is a transition point in the Rev range where a valve opens on the throttle body can you feel that (it's no v-tec surge so not surprised if you've not noticed it but may be select '2' on the auto box and look out for it)
Bizzyfingers
It did open, you can feel it, shame it does not open earlier because when the car changes gear it takes a while to get there again.
Bizzyfingers
What does the selections mean on the auto. Sorry to be all nube on this, what does the 2 and L stand for? Is L low range? What is 2 for?
Bizzyfingers
Plus... Overdrive flashes when driving normally.
nihontoman
I'm pretty sure that's the combination of it being NA and an auto put it on a dyno and you'll know fro sure if there's any problem
Bizzyfingers
Urgh... the turbo manual conversion can't come quick enough. I want to make sure I'm doing my conversion on a healthy engine though.
Hitbox Junkie
You going na-t. And what manual you going for. L stands for lightspeed- that's where you're going wrong.

Acton
What does the selections mean on the auto. Sorry to be all nube on this, what does the 2 and L stand for? Is L low range? What is 2 for? When you press the Manu button, L = 1st gear, 2= 2nd gear and D= 3rd gear
Acton
Plus... Overdrive flashes when driving normally. This means your overdrive is on. This lowers the gearing - good for the motorway. Switch it off and the light will stay on constantly. You may also find its a bit more responsive
Bizzyfingers
Cheers Acton that's cleared that up perfectly.
