Poshmalc
Hi guys, My car is idling like a bag of nails and I've managed to trace the fault to no spark in no1 cylinder. I am getting voltage to the coil pack but no spark. I have swapped over coil packs but the non spark still remains. I have also reset the ecu, but nothing will work. What could be causing the coilpack to not fire? Any ideas techno bods?
Shane
I would start by checking for continuity between the coil pack connector and the igniter and then if all ok try another igniter and then continuity between the igniter and ecu and then ecu. Poshmalc
Would the rest of the coil packs not fail if the igniter was kaput though mate? I've tried another coil pack but to no avail! I've got a mate coming over later, so I'll swap his igniter over!
mellonman
sounds like a clip to me , if you swapped the coil and its still the same , Ps , i did have a fault with mine a few years ago and it turnt out to be bad wiring to the coils so i replaced it all
Poshmalc
What do you mean by a clip mate?
mellonman
the coil pack clip are known for failing , the black plastic clip with connectors in , the connectors become wide and dont make a good contact, http://www.mkiv.co.uk/vbb/showthread.php?61141-How-To-Refurbish-coil-pack-connectors
Poshmalc
Could be, I'll check it after the ignitor! I've got voltage coming from the coil pack end of the clip though, so not sure! They look in good condition as I think the previous owner had them all replaced.
Poshmalc
I've just bypassed the clip and hard wired the coil pack straight through and it's still the same, even though it's receiving a strong voltage, the ignitor is my last hope, then we get into ECU territory! Chris Wilson
Sounds like the igniter pack or the wiring between igniter pack and coil pack, or igniter and ECU , or the ECu conector itself. Slight chance the driver transistor for that cylinder, in the ECU is fried, as Shane said. Any garage with a `scope that knows how to use it can diagnose in minutes. Each coil has its own driver transistor in the igniter, so it's easy to lose just one cylinder. RB26DETT ones are a nightmare for failing or semi failing, new ones no longer available, and whan they were they were £400 plus. I convert them to dual Bosch igniters which are 100% reliable. Poshmalc
The car ran fine just last week, it's a such a strange one!
Chris Wilson
All cars ran fine at some time Luckily for the likes of me, it doesn't last
Poshmalc
Get in, I found it! I was cutting away the insulation from he two wires that go into the connector to do a full recondition of the connector when I noticed a bit of charring! I whipped off a bit more protection and the wires had completely burnt through their plastic and sorted each other out! Thankfully it was only about 50mm long! Now the job of rewiring it neatly! Thanks for the help guys. Matt
Chris Wilson
Well done, hopefully no electrical damage done.

Poshmalc
Yeah, very lucky indeed, I pulled a length of the two wires out to check and thankfully it was only a small length! Just been for a run and all is good in the world again!
