No spark in no1 cylinder coil pack

Hi guys,

My car is idling like a bag of nails and I've managed to trace the fault to no spark in no1 cylinder. I am getting voltage to the coil pack but no spark. I have swapped over coil packs but the non spark still remains. I have also reset the ecu, but nothing will work. What could be causing the coilpack to not fire? Any ideas techno bods?

Sounds like the igniter pack or the wiring between igniter pack and coil pack, or igniter and ECU , or the ECu conector itself. Slight chance the driver transistor for that cylinder, in the ECU is fried, as Shane said. Any garage with a `scope that knows how to use it can diagnose in minutes.

Each coil has its own driver transistor in the igniter, so it's easy to lose just one cylinder. RB26DETT ones are a nightmare for failing or semi failing, new ones no longer available, and whan they were they were £400 plus. I convert them to dual Bosch igniters which are 100% reliable.

Get in, I found it! I was cutting away the insulation from he two wires that go into the connector to do a full recondition of the connector when I noticed a bit of charring! I whipped off a bit more protection and the wires had completely burnt through their plastic and sorted each other out! Thankfully it was only about 50mm long! Now the job of rewiring it neatly! Thanks for the help guys. Matt

Well done. You are lucky as there was a chance you could have fried your igniter pack with a dead short across one of it's outputs.
