Admiral Donuts
To be honest with you Matt I'm not really clued up on mountain bikes. The last bike I had was an Apollo and I was 12 years old. The Voodoo looks nice does it have suspension lockout as I might be using it on road sometimes.

j_jza80
I would advise buying a good used one while you're getting back into the hobby. No need to spend so much straight away.
supra matt
Voodoo are a great bike and Halfords are the uk dealer for them they also do 0% finance I think if you wont to stretch your budget,

mc92
I'd definitely go hardtail at that budget, full suspensions tend to be of a not-great quality at low budgets. Good brands include Giant, Cannondale, Specialized etc. Try and find last year's stock if possible you can get some great deals if shops are trying to shift bikes before getting next years in. I put my own bike together and sourced all the parts myself which was fun and let me get all the bits I wanted. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MYNDZbnuZLJs9433nhkMrHD8hD3BroIu3ID0YSe6Gs8/edit#gid=0 you might find this useful. pedrosixfour
+1 for going with a used bike. I picked up a Giant hybrid worth about €700 a few weeks ago for €150. It was less than a year old with about 50 miles on it.
Admiral Donuts
Thanks for your advice guys. I wasn't sure if I should buy a used bike just in case something goes wrong with it. And I don't think I'm capable of putting a bike together myself I wouldn't know where to start lol

listy
I recently got a Diamondback Response for about £350 in the Argos sale. The bike retails at about £5000. Hardtail, with lockable front suspension, hydraulic disc brakes, 18" frame. I use it to get to work every day and can't fault it for what I use it for. Worth shopping around to get a good deal. The offer is still on at Argos too.

Guest Nicholas
Have you thought about getting a bike on the Governments cycle to work scheme? I recently got a Kona Precept, can't fault it at all. If you'll be mostly doing road riding dont get a full suspension bike it will be too much work, definitely a hard tail. http://www.konaworld.com/precept.cfm
Admiral Donuts
Hey guys I've decided to buy a decent used bike with the money that I have saved. Just wondering if anyone knows website I can check the bikes serial number to see if it isn't stolen? Also thanks for recommending pink bike Malcolm I think I've seen a Gaint on there that I like. I've got SLX bits on mine and they're very nice to use and are very responsive. Never heard of the frame brand though. You might want to go for a front fork with a little more suspension travel if you're going over rough stuff and I'd definitely put a shorter stem on it to make it more nimble. Other than that, seems like a good XC bike.
Bizzyfingers
Get yourself a Carrera Kraken from Halfords, save a few quid at the same time. Cracking bikes (no pun) I've had two and done many miles on them with basic maintenance.
pjavon
I'd say a fair bit depends on what you want to use it for. Also try and find a shop that'll give you tips on fitment, it really can make a massive difference to comfort levels especially if you haven't ridden for a while. Look on youtube etc for bike set up/fitment. If you can find a decent bike shop it can sometimes be better in the long run, some will change the stem and maybe the bars to suit you. If your ok with fitment and are happy to buy of the internet another site is chain reaction cycles http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/mountain-bikes?f=2258&sort=pricelow If it was me though I'd be looking for second hand as already mentioned Good luck
Admiral Donuts
After spending most of the day looking for a decent used bike apart from the one I mentioned above I haven't found anything guys. I'll pop to Halfords tomorrow evening if there open and have a look. Plus it's trying to find my size to.
