stevie_b
I changed my W58 gearbox oil recently, and the drain plug had quite a lot of metal shavings / filings stuck to it. I've attached a photo, although this was after I'd wiped some off. As you can imagine, I wasn't delighted to see this. Is it normal to see metal filings on the drain plug? I guess it must happen a fair bit for the plug to be magnetic in the first place. I'm trying to figure out if I should be saving for a box rebuild or a good used box. David P
That's normal, the magnetic plug is "filtering" the oil and collecting wear and tear debris.
herbiemercman
what's your mileage and how many owners, is this the first oil change.? I did my gearbox oil last year at 41,000 miles, only one or two bits of swarf was on the magnetic plug.

I had the oil changed soon after I bought it.

Thanks for the feedback, and kind words about the car! You have a W58 in your supra don't you? Do you have to push the clutch pedal down really hard to get a smooth change from 1st to 2nd? Almost like you're trying to push it into the engine bay? Mine's like that. I'm pretty sure my floor mat isn't stopping the clutch, but I'll check again. Looks like your clutch needs bleeding and or a change of fluid, not sure if or you can adjust the travel on these cars? as i have only done this on other cars etc, it could be a self adjusting design? in which case your pressure plates could be getting worn,? someone on this club will know. If the clutch is hindering your gear changes as you describe, then this would not help the normal wear on the gearbox. Hope this helps. stevie_b
OK thanks, I'll start a new thread about the clutch pedal feel to avoid going off-topic in this thread.
Chris Wilson
Doesn't look too bad, manual gearboxes always create some debris off the synchro hub teeth and elsewhere.
stevie_b
Thanks all, I appreciate the advice. I'll file this under as normal wear and tear.
