Metal bits in old gearbox oil (W58)

I changed my W58 gearbox oil recently, and the drain plug had quite a lot of metal shavings / filings stuck to it. I've attached a photo, although this was after I'd wiped some off.

As you can imagine, I wasn't delighted to see this. Is it normal to see metal filings on the drain plug? I guess it must happen a fair bit for the plug to be magnetic in the first place. I'm trying to figure out if I should be saving for a box rebuild or a good used box.

what's your mileage and how many owners, is this the first oil change.? I did my gearbox oil last year at 41,000 miles, only one or two bits of swarf was on the magnetic plug.

My car's done approx 170,000km. About 4-5 owners I think. I've had it for the last 11 years. I had the oil changed soon after I bought it.

considering the 11 years of ownership and just looking at the superb condition of your car, then it has IMHO been driven well, may be like most of us you can crunch the odd gear change, so i would say the amount of swarf collected over such a mileage and time is within normal wear and tear.

Thanks for the feedback, and kind words about the car!

You have a W58 in your supra don't you? Do you have to push the clutch pedal down really hard to get a smooth change from 1st to 2nd? Almost like you're trying to push it into the engine bay? Mine's like that. I'm pretty sure my floor mat isn't stopping the clutch, but I'll check again.

Looks like your clutch needs bleeding and or a change of fluid, not sure if or you can adjust the travel on these cars? as i have only done this on other cars etc, it could be a self adjusting design? in which case your pressure plates could be getting worn,? someone on this club will know. If the clutch is hindering your gear changes as you describe, then this would not help the normal wear on the gearbox. Hope this helps.
