Guest loughman
Hidi folks I left my car with a mechanic some weeks back to get the rocker cover gaskets cahnged and when he was at it i got him to change the spark plugs. The new plugs were ngk platinum tips. The air filter was also changed at this time. The car had been running a greddy filter however i was unable to get a replacement element of the correct size so i replaced it with a ramair filter off ebay. This filter was almost of identical dimensions to the greddy. The car was returned to me with this work completed and it was immediately evident that it wasnt running right, it was spluttering and missing. I returned the car to the same mechanic for this to be corrected. He examined the car and told me i needed to replace the plug leads. I ordered a replacement set and these were installed. I collected the car from him tonight and it was running worse now than it was previously it was coughing and spluttering and was evidently off cylinders and then the triangular warning light in the middle of the rev couner came on after only a few hundred yards of driving (without the brake or handbrake being applied) I drove straight back to the mechanic and he has again asked for the car to be left with him. Has anyone got any idea of what might be at the back of all of this. It is getting very time consuming and frustrating and i desperately want her running right and back on the road for a wee while before the weather changes. I assume he has checked the obvious like vacuum hoses, cleaning the throttle body etc. Any help at all whatsoever guys would be very greatly, greatly appreciated. Dnk
Your mechanic doesn't sound the best to me and i'd be finding another one. Could it be something as simple as a plug lead or leads not being pushed fully onto the plugs. Or a spark plug hasn't been tightened up. Doesn't make sense for it to suddenly run like this unless the mechanics not done something correctly or your really unlucky and something has coincidently occurred to cause the problem. I wouldn't be throwing new parts at it, i'd be going over what's been done first and checking the simple obvious things
Ian C
Does the new Ram air filter incorporate the MAF..? If the MAF sensor has been deleted it'll run terribly like this.
Dnk
I also wouldn't use just any old filter off ebay, some are quite frankly rubbish and not worth fitting. I'd pop a stock airbox back on with either a stock filter from Toyota or either a K & N or Apexi panel filter
Mike2JZ
Does the new Ram air filter incorporate the MAF..? If the MAF sensor has been deleted it'll run terribly like this. Depending on the N/A that he has, it is more than likely that it has a MAP sensor, so he only has to worry about putting in the temperature sensor in on the intake pipe. That said, if you have a MAF sensor then I'd agree with Ian if it has been removed. If you are getting the main engine warning light appearing, then it should save the error code to the ECU. Read this guide here about how to check the diagnostic codes that your ecu might be showing. I'd get your mechanic to check the distributor timing as well, if it's been moved slightly then it could lead to the symptomes you have described
Guest loughman
cleaned the carbon deposits out of distributer ? and rotor arm or maybe need replacing check all ht leads are in the right place I will suggest this if he hasn't already done so. Thanks

Any thing he has done for me previously has always been spot on. I think your right we need to take it back from the start and go over it rather than mudying the waters by adding new parts. I am hoping it is something as simple as loose leads as you suggest. I will keep you psoted. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated

Much appreciated Hi Loughman, Top of the mornin to you, I have a good mechanic for many years, but like many others they mean well but fall fowl on the electronics and diagnostics, also fault codes are only a guide, like saying the problem is in dublin, but cannot tell you where, so even the experts revert to "parts changing", trial and error. This club is great as you are exposed to guys who have had the same experience with their cars and can tell you how to fix it, you could do worse than contacting chris wilson, he sorted my brother's tt, and non of the local mechanics had a clue, all be it they tried their best. good luck, let us know how you get on. ? herbiemercman.
